January 7: CES 2025 is in fully swing, and while the tech event isn’t overly exciting if you’re into console gaming, a bit of Nintendo Switch 2 is coming out of the show as accessories maker Genki has a dummy model on display.

The company has the unit on hand behind closed doors. To be clear, this is not a final retail unit. However, attendees can still get their hands on the dummy device which German outlet Netzwelt says is larger in the hands. The site was told by Genki that it has the “exact dimensions” of the Nintendo Switch 2.

Companies handling accessories for Nintendo Switch 2 should have products ready around release. Genki itself is planning several different add-ons including controllers and a docking station.

Netzwelt notes in its report that the Joy-Con are moved from the side and are no longer pushed in upwards when taking them off. The right Joy-Con is also said to contain an additional button, which is not labeled, but is thought to be the new C button (functionality is not confirmed at this time).

To be fair, there isn’t much new to see here – the Nintendo Switch 2 has seen a significant amount of leaks for the Joy-Con, dock, and main unit. Still, the fact that Genki is taking this dummy to a large industry event is notable. The countdown for Nintendo to make an announcement continues with the company previously confirming that news will be shared by the end of March at the latest.

Update: According to a report from Numerama, Genki is claiming that they have access to a real Nintendo Switch 2 console. Additionally, the company claims it’s launching this April. The site, sourcing accessory makers, also claims that you can buy a Nintendo Switch 2 on the black market “as long as you put some money down”.

January 9: Genki is backing up claims that the new Joy-Con will attach via magnets instead of a sliding rail. To detach them, users press a big button at the top of the backside of each controller. This pushes out a pin that nudges against the chassis of the console to disconnect the magnets. However, apparently you can use brute force to remove the Joy-Con even if they’re secure enough as they are.

Probably the bigger piece of news concerns an optional sensor in the Joy-Con. There’s been online speculation about this already, but by using another attachment, the controller might offer mouse-like functionality.

Thanks to The Verge for the latest update.

January 10: In response to an interview with Japanese outlet Sankei, who reached out for a comment on the matter of what has been shown at CES 2025 and also what has been put on retailer websites such as Amazon recently, the company representative for Nintendo commented that “the images and videos are not official.”, neither confirming nor denying whether they accurately represent what the final system will look like.
