Despite the vitriol online, this year’s VGX Awards appear to have been a big success on a technical level, with the show bringing more viewers for more time than they had every thought possible. Viacom’s Erik Flannigan said that the show “exceeded” their expectations, and that the average view time (32 minutes) was “way beyond our wildest dreams”.

Producer Casey Patterson chimed in, saying that they’re already talking about next year’s show:

“Yes, we would love to do this show again and those are the discussions we are having right now, and we’ll produce that show, that stream in the same way we produced this year’s which is to take the feedback of the gamers, good and bad.”

“The only thing we can do is assure gamers that we are listening. They can tell from the show we built this year that we like them talking to us. Good, bad, ugly, we want to them to continue to talk to us at the decibel that they have been.”

For a while there we weren’t sure if Nintendo was going to add Miiverse communities for older 3DS titles, but today it looks like they are: A soft update for the online community added communities for the following games:

Ocarina of Time 3D, Star Fox 64 3D, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Mario Tennis Open, and a whole bunch more. Check out the full list here if you have a Nintendo Network ID.

ON THIS EPISODE: Parks and Recreation is a good– but not great– show (or is it?). Proteus has more to it than meets the eye. The Wii U is still selling pretty poorly, which isn’t great.

PLUS: Listener mail about gaming difficulty and its effects on the medium’s merits, how long it takes us to judge a game after playing it, and more!

“If it ain’t broke, make it dramatically better.”

To say that Nintendo has released too many platforming Mario games in the last two years would not be particularly hyperbolic if you concern yourself with only the raw numbers. 2011 saw the release of Super Mario 3D Land on 3DS, 2012 had New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS) and New Super Mario Bros. U (Wii U), and now 2013 has slid soundly to a spectacular finish with Super Mario 3D World. At first glance it may seem like an annualization of gaming’s finest platforming franchise, but it would be erroneous to criticize Nintendo’s strategy when they manage to make every one of these games at the very least first-rate in fundamental design, and it would be downright dishonest to suggest that we would be better off if they hadn’t created something as lustrous and enjoyable as Super Mario 3D World.

Music rhythm adventure game Tadpole Treble has hit its Kickstarter goal and will now be made into a PC game, but its Wii U stretch goal is still about $10K away. The Kickstarter has already ended so donations cannot be given that way, but the team does accept PayPal money, so if you’re truly interested in seeing this game on Wii U then head over here to send them your money.

Above: Proteus sure is nice looking, eh?

The second recording of episode 70 (the first was lost) features the following: Super Mario 3D World is better single player! Proteus is trippy, immersive, and interesting! Wind Waker HD has a very frustrating sidequest! PLUS: Listener mail about the Wii U’s lifespan and whether spoiled gamers are to blame for Wii U’s misery. AND: A discussion about immersive games, and what makes a game immersive vs. not.

After approval by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court this past Thursday, Atari is preparing to enter the world of business again after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy back in January of 2013. The company (Atari Inc.) will get $3.4 million from its parent company (Atari S.A.) to get it out of bankruptcy, and then another $1.75 million to restart operations and try to turn a profit. No specific plans have been revealed for what they might do differently this time around, but we’ll likely hear news soon enough.

Released amidst a flurry of absolutely no hype or promotion– courtesy of Nintendo, it seems– Jett Rocket II: The Wrath of Taikai popped onto the 3DS eShop as the sequel to a well-loved (if perhaps a bit archaic) WiiWare title that bears the same franchise name. It’s billed as a platformer– and that it is– but it’s one that can’t seem to choose between 3D and 2D, swapping between the two as though it’s a motorcyclist in the busy lanes of a Los Angeles highway. The game is certainly trying to take you somewhere, and doesn’t seem afraid to take its own route to get there– but is the trip worth the price?
