Shigeru Miyamoto

Shigeru Miyamoto is celebrating his 61st birthday today. Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, Zelda, and plenty of other Nintendo franchises, was born on November 16, 1952.

With that, Happy Birthday, Shigeru Miyamoto!

Masahiro Sakurai is being recorded regularly while developing the new Smash Bros. games. A camera typically captures his words when he talks about editing and changes at work.

This may seem like a biazzare thing to do from an outside perspective. However, it’s all done in order to retain the accuracy of his orders.

Sakurai wrote in his weekly Famitsu column:

“It remains as an accurate recording. The people under supervision can check over and pick up things that would become blurred in something like a written memo.”

“Everything I say or talk about is recorded as is, but to be honest, it doesn’t feel very good. You know how most people don’t really like listening to [a recording of] their own voice?”

How many hours of gameplay will Super Mario 3D World have to offer? TheBitBlock’s Josh Thomas, who has been playing through the title for review, said it took him about eight hours to complete. Naturally, this amount will differ by person.

Before you get too concerned, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. First, Super Mario 3D World has two extra modes available: Captain Toad and Mystery House. It’s unclear how much gameplay is contained in each, but it will surely extend the experience – even if it’s just by a bit.

We may also be dealing with a similar situation as Super Mario 3D Land’s post-game levels. Two separate reviewers, writing on NeoGAF, said the following about World’s length:

I won’t spoil anything, but anyone who has played 3D Land, knows that finishing the game is really not finishing it at all. That’s all I can say.

It’s a lot longer than 8 hours, folks. I can’t really say much more than that, but don’t worry.

So it may take you eight hours to complete Super Mario 3D World’s main story, but there should be more for players to see and do.

Masahiro Sakurai attends work at Namco Bandai each day so that he can work on the latest Smash Bros. entry. Despite his lingering arm condition, he still makes sure to show up at 10 AM without taking any unnecessary days off. That doesn’t mean he’s forced to, though.

Sakurai, writing in his bi-weekly Famitsu column, said his office hours are completely up to him.

“My office hours are up to me. So long as I complete the new Smash Bros., I could show up only once a week, or only at night, or even telecommute if I wanted to.”

Sakurai also spoke about he ensures he gives his approval on all aspects of the game. He meticulously looks at the underlying elements, like the motions and UI.

“It’s just as important to check the specifications behind the development of things like graphics, sound, motions, characters, stages, game modes, and UI, not just the products themselves.”
