Dragon Quest IX ending up as a DS exclusive was a big deal back in the day. But how’d that come about in any case?

During the Dragon Quest 30th Anniversary Countdown Special this past week, Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino spoke about how he convinced series creator Yuji Horii to make IX for DS. Hino was also developing Professor Layton at that time, and Nintendo’s portable was experiencing great momentum. Horii hesitated at first and questioned having a numbered Dragon Quest game on a handheld, but Hino kept pushing him to do it.

Horii became a big fan of the tag mode in Dragon Quest IX, which would end up partially inspiring StreetPass support for the 3DS. He liked how it connected the game world and real world together.

Horii also said that his wish is just to “have Dragon Quest be enjoyed by as many people as possible”.

It’s been nearly a decade since we last saw an entry in the Elite Beat Agents / Ouendan franchise. That begs the question: will iNiS ever work on a new game? Elite Beat Agents creator Keiichi Yano does seem up for it.

Speaking with Polygon, Yano mentioned the following:

“I have a great relationship with Nintendo. I think, as with many of these types of games that have this following and at some point they come back, I think there will be a right time when it feels like [the series] should come back. A lot of times, the platform will dictate those kind of things.”

Yano also said that he would “certainly love to make another version of it, and hopefully it’s on the next platform.”

Look at the video below for Yano’s full response.

During the DS era, Square Enix brought out a bunch of games for the portable – and many of them were quite good. There were the Final Fantasy III and IV remakes, The World Ends With You, Chrono Trigger, and more.

Amazon now has these titles are pretty decent prices. Final Fantasy III, for instance, can be had for just over $11. You can find that and other Square Enix DS games for cheap here.

Warner Bros. was once planning new video games based on the Dirty Harry film franchise. It was previously known that a primary version was in the works for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 courtesy of developer The Collective, but it came to light in recent years that Sensor Sweep was also making a separate game for other platforms including Wii and DS.

Sensor Sweep’s project would have adopted the same plot and some similar gameplay mechanics. However, it was an alternative approach, with plans to include a cel-shaded art style.

All Dirty Harry games were eventually scrapped. Regarding Sensor Sweep’s take on the IP, the team was well behind schedule and found itself not properly equipped for development on home consoles given its past work exclusively on handhelds. These factors contributed to its demise, along with the declining interest from Warner Bros. in moving forward with Dirty Harry after the HD version was cancelled.

Here’s the full report from Unseen64 and Liam Robertson:

In Japan, Nintendo is ending repair support for all colors of the very first DS (model number NTR-001). This is because the company is now having difficulty keeping stock of spare parts.

The final date of them receiving NTR-001 DS for repairs is April 30. However, if spare parts run out before that date, Nintendo may not be able to conduct repairs.

Nintendo still has plans to continue repairs of the other DS systems for the time being. This includes the DS Lite (USG-001), DSi (TWL-001), and DSi LL (UTL-001).

According to a tweet from Canadian retailer Video Games Plus, Nintendo has ceased production of DS cartridges. The retailer does promise its own set of exclusive restocks for the near future, however.

Video Games Plus sent out the following message a little while ago:

Nintendo has not officially confirmed that it has stopped production of DS carts worldwide. But given the fact that Video Games Plus is a retailer, they could very well have this sort of information as its disposal.
