New Nintendo 3DS

System: Nintendo 3DS (what a shock)
Release Date: October 3, 2014
Developer: Sora Ltd/Bandai Namco Games
Publisher: Nintendo

Author: Patrick

The long-awaited fourth entry in Nintendo’s crazy crossover series is finally out, but it finds itself on a curious platform – the 3DS. A multiplayer fighting game is a strange fit for the portable console, but this new instalment retains the addictive style of fighting and throws in a few new ways to battle. Even on the 3DS, the frenetic pace of previous entries is still present (to an extent – this ain’t Melee) and Smash is still very much an experience accessible to both newcomers and seasoned players, with plenty of weird Nintendo references, of course. As a sequel, the game promises more of everything: more characters, more items, more assist trophies, more stuff to collect… the problem is that in some cases Smash on the 3DS feels like a lesser game than the ones that’ve come before it. Make no mistake, the game is still an incredibly enjoyable time, especially with a few friends, but the series makes the jump to the 3DS with a couple of compromises.

Final Fantasy Explorers will be one of a few 3DS games to not make use of the system’s stereoscopic 3D visuals. Square Enix has also detailed how the game will control on New 3DS. The camera can be controlled with the c-stick, the ZL button is used for monster lock-on, and the ZR button is for summon monster lock-on. Players can also use the Circle Pad Pro with a regular 3DS.

There are quite a few changes being made to the rewards system for Club Nintendo in Japan. First, it looks like the gold and platinum ranks will no longer exist come the end of this month, meaning the next lot of rewards being offered to gold and platinum members will be the last. To go along with this, no Club Nintendo points will be offered for registering a New 3DS and going forward only software titles will be eligble for points and not hardware units. At this time, all other regions remain unaffected, and you can check out the final offerings for gold and platinum members below: an exclusive Picross game and 2015 calendar for platinum and just the 2015 calendar for gold members.
