HAL Laboratory talks Kirby’s Blowout Blast, new details

Nintendo and HAL Laboratory have three Kirby games on 3DS to celebrate the series’ 25th anniversary. Team Kirby Clash Deluxe is out now. A new multiplayer action game will follow later in the year. In between the two is Kirby’s Blowout Blast, coming to the 3DS eShop this summer.

In Nintendo Dream this month, when asked how Kirby’s Blowout Blast compares to the sub-game Kirby 3D Rumble in Kirby: Planet Robobot, HAL Laboratory’s Shinya Kumazaki answered that while both are digital games, the former will have an overall volume that’s more like a normal packaged release. The sub-game was made more as an experiment on seeing whether the epitome of Kirby games can be enjoyed in 3D. They had been receiving requests to create a 3D game, and Kumazaki also wanted to challenge himself in making it.

Kirby’s Blowout Blast will be played on one screen with a fixed camera. Side-scrolling games were easy because players only need to hit enemies coming from the front. But with a 3D game, you have to take the full 360 degrees into consideration, so it would be harder to hit bullets than ordinary shooter games.

Kumazaki joked that it would’ve been easier if Kirby could fire rapidly, but considering that he inhales and then basically spits, he has to make the hit in one shot. The team balanced the shooting range, homing ability, and inhaling detection so that they wouldn’t end up becoming unnatural, and put the results on a fixed screen to make the new game.

In the current era there are many Kirby games that have a variety of copy abilities and command moves, so Kumazaki thought he’d like to come back to a simple Kirby experience for once. It’s also good to go back to the series’ roots since it’s the series’ 25th anniversary, and the new game is being developed with “The First 3D Kirby” as a key phrase.

That’s not all on Kirby’s Blowout Blast. When it was initially announced during the April Nintendo Direct, Nintendo only shared a few details. But thanks to a listing on the company’s website, we have more information about the game.

Here’s what Nintendo shares:

Have a blast inhaling foes and blowing them away in 3D environments across 25+ stages. Inhale enough enemies and you can launch one huge Blaster Bullet capable of wiping out a troop of Waddle Dees. Now’s your chance to battle iconic bosses like Kracko Jr and King Dedede in 3D!

Inhaling multiple enemies to launch Blaster Bullets is a great way to pump up your score and go for a bronze, silver, or gold star. Another way to score big is to rack up a combo by continuously firing at enemies without missing. Or you could always just collect coins as you jump across platforms. As you progress, you’ll unlock EX stages, which provide a tougher challenge to master. Celebrate your victories by tapping a Kirby series amiibo figure to build a statue in the plaza that plays new music!

– Inhale enemies to launch Blaster Bullets and take out groups of enemies in a 3D space
– Obtain a bronze, silver, or gold trophy while shooting for a high score
– Face down beloved Kirby series bosses like Kracko Jr and King Dedede
– Unlock EX stages and master them for an even tougher challenge
