[Let’s Talk] What are you playing? – August 2019

Posted on August 3, 2019 by (@NE_Brian) in Let's Talk

A new month rolled right on in earlier this week. Now that we’re in August, we want to know what you’ve been playing.

Are you playing Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 or Fire Emblem: Three Houses? Still creating levels in Super Mario Maker 2? No matter the case, let us know in the comments below.

Highlights from last week’s topic: Fire Emblem: Three Houses impressions

Fire Emblem Three Houses is everything I’d hoped it would be and then some. I’ve been a fan of the series since Awakening, have also now played Fates Birthright, Fates Conquest, Blazing Blade, and partways through Geneology of the Holy War, Path of Radiance, Radiant Dawn and Shadow Dragon.

The appropriate word that comes to mind with regard to Three Houses, is masterpiece. This game is so good, I feel like I’m bursting joy from the inside with how much I’m enjoying it. It’s not perfect. Some of the stills for support conversations are under par, for example, but by and large I really don’t have any complaints with this game. The Garag Mach Monastery aspect of the game is so incredibly addictive, and as a role-playing game I really do feel like I am guiding my students as a professor. I set their goals, and sometimes a student will come up to me and say hey, I want to be a Sniper for reasons XYZ consistent with their character. Being that I’m playing a video game I could say no and keep them on their current path, but given that it’s a role playing game and I’m in the role, I don’t feel like it’s right for me to do that to my students. I want to respect their desires, as I would if I was really there as their professor. And that’s what I love most about this game- how much it sucked me in and has me attached to the world and people in it.

It’s so far has accomplished the base minimum of what I wanted: A game with production levels comparable to Echoes, but without the terrible gameplay of Echoes. Still a tad salty about how the same-sex options were implemented, but the game is still pretty dang good.

It’s the best Persona x Fire Emblem game I’ve ever played!

More seriously, though, I’ve enjoyed the time management a lot. After shortly struggling to locate two physical copies for myself and my partner, we’ve both been playing it relatively in sync and as the same house, Golden Deer. I’m a pretty number crunching type of guy, and having all the little details to look after is really where I get my satisfaction from FE games. Seeing how even her students have behaved a little differently in my partner’s file than mine, along with other differing factors, has made the game a lot of fun watch unfold as our games create separate stories.
