[Let’s Talk] What are you playing? – March 2017

Posted on March 11, 2017 by (@NE_Brian) in General Nintendo, Let's Talk

We’re a little ways into March, so we want to know what everyone is up to with their gaming sessions as of late. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is no doubt something that many of you are playing, but I’m willing to bet there are at least a few of you out there who are spending your time with something else. Plus, I know some folks enjoy going through more than one game at once.

So what are you playing right now? Is Zelda: Breath of the Wild indeed taking up most of your time? Let us know in the comments below.

Highlights from last week’s topic: Your impressions of Switch and Zelda: Breath of the Wild

I’m blown away. I’ve been playing all day today and it’s hard to put down, lol.

The Switch + Zelda combo is a Godsend. Both feel like something I’ve never felt before… in a way.

BotW is simply superb. The one gripe Ive had with it are the controls. A lot of things could’ve been handled better in terms of button layout, but once you spend some hours with it, it steadily becomes more natural. Mastery will certainly take some time though. Aside from that, I’ve been using the Switch screenshot feature constantly with BotW xD!! So many gorgeous Vistas and moments!!

Anyway, BotW… there’s so much I want to say but I’m trying to be brief. The way they’ve crafted that amazing world is beyond anything I’ve ever played. They really went above and beyond the call. Escapism doesn’t even begin to describe this masterpiece.

And the Switch? Every time I start it up I feel like I’m starting up a dream. It’s weird. It’s so surreal that it’s very hard to explain, lol. I don’t know how Nintendo are gonna top themselves other than more powerful hardware, because the experience is just leagues above anything else.

And I’m not saying Sony and Microsoft haven’t done a good job, because they certainly have… but Nintendo did some secret sauce/magic or something with Switch/BotW that I’m very curious to see how they can push it beyond this.

I hate it. Absolutely hate it. It’s completely disrupted my getting any work done. No really, I’ve managed about three hours work since I got it. Just keep getting pulled back into Zelda.

Aside from spoiling my livelihood, I love it. Best handheld Nintendo have ever made. I still struggle to call it a home console, it’s not, it’s a tablet with TV out. But it’s still awesome.

Zelda is just amazing. Feels like a logical progression, where the series has always been headed. I’ve been playing Zelda 31 years, right from the beginning. It’s always felt as if Nintendo have always been pushing to make a bigger, more open world whenever they can. Now they’ve managed it. The scope of BOTW is amazing, God knows how long I’ll be playing to cover every inch of it.

I can’t even start playing the game without looking up and realizing at least 10 hours have gone by. This game is on a complete different level than anything before it. Just spoke with my friend and he has been up for 20 hours straight playing. BTW I have only gotten to one dungeon so far and seen maybe 25% of the map.

Breath of the Wild is already my favorite game of all time! It’s everything I’ve ever wanted from the Zelda series. The Switch itself feels so nice and is really easy to use. I’m amazed at how quick everything is in the main menu.

I’ve spent a good amount of time playing both on my TV and on the go. Both are great experiences.

Second day and 22 hours in, I just can’t stop playing… made my way to eventide island with cryonis and had to beat that black hinox to finally finish the challenge there… but it one-hit me and now I have to repeat the whole island again… pretty hard challenge but I’m sure there is a way to cheese that guy… still wasted like an hour, fml

Nintendo Switch – The console has met my expectations so far, and although there are only a few games at launch, most are of a reasonable to great quality. Better to have a small, solid quality than an excess of a mixed-bag. So far I’ve played the Switch evenly between handheld and TV modes and both are sound experiences. I love playing the Switch portably though, and with a USB-C powerbank, I’m getting upwards of 9 hours play – perhaps even more.

Breath of the Wild – This game is great, without a doubt. With only 7 or so hours played I’m wondering if it is truly worthy of some of the highest praise it has received. However, the more I play, the more I realise that this isn’t just a modification of the typical open world mechanics, but one grounded in the detail and quality that one expects from the Zelda franchise. Whether it becomes a new watermark for the series, from my perspective, will very much depend on how emotive the story becomes, and whether the excitement of Zelda being open world is tainted by repetition or enhanced by continuous wonder.
