[Let’s Talk] Your favorite games of 2018

Posted on December 29, 2018 by (@NE_Brian) in Let's Talk

2017 was a fantastic debut year for Switch. It seemed like month after month, Nintendo was putting out a big game. Zelda: Breath of the Wild kicked off the system’s launch, with Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and others to follow. You could make a case that 2018 didn’t reach those same heights, but this year had plenty of great games. We saw the likes of Kirby Star Allies, Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu / Eevee, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – and that’s just on the first-party side of things. Third-parties contributed with hits like Octopath Traveler, and many top indies found a home on Switch including Celeste, Hollow Knight, Dead Cells, The Messenger, and many more.

Since 2018 is just about over, it’s time to take a minute to reflect on things. What were your favorite games of 2017? Even if they weren’t on Switch (we can’t forget about the 3DS!), be sure to let us know in the comments below.

Highlights from last week’s topic: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate impressions

This has been the most fun I have had with a Smash game (well since the last one). My 16 yr old daughter and I spent most last weekend taking turns unlocking characters and then beating the crap out of characters-her as Lil Mac & Lucina and me as Zero Suit Samus & K Rool. Spent this weekend beating Spirits which is frustrating as h*&% but still enjoy it. Haven’t really even touched online yet though when I have I was fairly underwhelmed. Overall A/A- and definitely think with the right changes it will move to that A+/A range.

Really enjoying the adventure map on easy. Bowser + polar bear (super armor) + victini (hyper smash attacks) + lv99 midna, and every battle is 3 smash attacks and boom, done. It’s a lot of fun. I’m the epitome of casual player. Played online a bit, was super disappointed Mii names don’t display when playing with friends like they did in 4. The Mii outfits are one of my favorite parts of these games, so I’m overjoyed there’s so many new ones (seriously, a ton!), especially the Arcade Bunny hat! My favorite Nintendo character! Such an awesome hat. Anyways, I make horrible puns with the Mii display names, combining them with my name, or each other, in various ways, so I’m sad my friends can’t see them and groan audibly anymore.

I really do miss custom moves for fighters, and the stereoscopy. Brawl is still my favorite because of Subspace, but I think Ultimate edges out 3DS (never had Wii U) for second best. World of Light really is fun. The superhard stupid fights on the spirit board make me facepalm at how stupid hard they are, so I’ll never get many spirits, but it’s fun to attempt them.

Also, it was really stupid, the character unlock method. Not only was it a grind and annoying and archaic, but a lot of them were also stupid hard. Am quite irked they eased up on the difficulty in the patch after I unlocked everyone with great difficulty.

Not a perfect game, not even really close to the ultimate comprehensive Smash game. There’s multiple reasons to keep every single previous smash game, things that aren’t here, but in general, this new one is a fantastic full speed ahead all hands on deck effort by Nintendo/Namco/Sakurai. Hats off for another amazing game.

I am still trying to decide if I bite or not. Having Ken in made me want to get the game, but the game is expensive and I dont enjoy Pokemon, Fire Emblem or Animal Crossing stuff at all,and when you take those out, its nothing more than it used to be.

It has all the technical depth of melee and all of the story and other modes of brawl or 4. In my opinion it is the best smash ever. Very thankful to get to introduce my 4 year old son to smash with this entry. We are having an absolutely fantastic time with this game. Thank you Sakurai/Nintendo for this gem.
