Metroid director and producer Yoshio Sakamoto has again addressed the series’ future.

Sakamoto just finished up his work on Metroid Dread, which came to Switch last month. With many fans having completed the experience, some can’t help but wonder what lies in store for the character going forward.

Speaking with CNET, Sakamoto stated: “As long as the character Samus exists, I think her adventure will continue.” He also reiterated that while Dread ends the current Metroid storyline, “it’s not the ultimate end.” This is something that Sakamoto touched on a few months ago.

Regarding the future of Metroid, Sakamoto mentioned:

“As long as the character Samus exists, I think her adventure will continue. I feel that Samus should continue her adventure, and that’s something that we would really need to put our best effort into. Metroid Dread does conclude the five-story arc that has been going on for 35 years. However, I feel that it’s not the ultimate end. There should be something that is able to continue the franchise and the universe. So yes, as long as your character Samus is loved, I would like to do what I have to do.”

Next up for the Metroid series is the first-person 3D adventure game Metroid Prime 4, which is now being developed by Retro Studios. Nintendo first announced the game at E3 2017 with a different team behind the project, but then delivered the news in January 2019 that the project had been restarted entirely with Retro taking the helm
