How to Say Goodbye

Arte, along with Florian Veltman and Baptiste Portefaix, today announced that How to Say Goodbye will be appearing on Switch next month. The puzzle title will be ready to go on November 3, 2022.

How to Say Goodbye follows a character a few moments after their death, recounting their journey in an unknown world after life. Players will need to help the ghost accept his death and pass to the other side in this liminal space after life, populated by various spirits, some of them benevolent. The game involves moving different elements on a grid to guide the ghost to the exit symbolized by a door, though they’ll need to overcome obstacles and lost spirits along the way.

Here’s an overview with more details:

How to say Goodbye tells the story of someone who has recently been turned into a ghost, lost in an unfamiliar world populated by disoriented spirits. In this narrative puzzle game, move the decor to help the characters escape the liminal world in which they are lost. Help them on their quest to move on and escape from the grasp of a mysterious Wizard.

Overcome tricky grid-based puzzles to lead the ghosts onward and travel through more than 15 chapters, from your kitchen to the moon. Solve numerous conundrums in a universe inspired by illustration and great classics of children’s literature (Tomi Ungerer, Tove Jansson, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Maurice Sendak…)

Key Features

  • A poignant puzzle game that deals with grief with kindness and subtlety
  • Save your friends before they disappear forever
  • Guide the ghosts out of the strange world in which they are trapped
  • Meet various characters, help them find peace and mourn their own death
  • Unveil the secret of the Wizard and the Spleens, the misguided spirits that haunt the other side

“Grief is a universal experience unique to each individual, and one that evokes strong emotions,” Veltman said. “However, in most video games, it is reduced to a violent act: death is used as a metaphor to indicate to the player in an extremely binary way that he loses or wins, that he exists or does not exist anymore. We wanted to approach the subject in a more subtle and positive way, with sensitivity.”
