Sakurai speaks vaguely about how long he’ll continue developing games, sounds optimistic

Masahiro Sakurai is only 43 years old, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be around forever. One of these days, the Super Smash Bros. creator will need to step away from game development.
Sakurai tackled the topic of how long a developer can continue creating games in his regular column this week. First, he revealed an interesting tidbit: he’s one of the oldest members of the team for the new Smash Bros. games.
“As I look around the new Smash Bros. development office, hardly anyone here is older than I am.”
Going back to the topic of age, Sakurai soon sees a period when devs from his generation “will begin to leave the front lines.”
“Seeing as there are very few people from the previous generation [in development], it’s likely that in a few years, people from my generation will begin to leave the front lines.”
Sakurai closed by discussing his current state and commenting on how much longer he’ll continue:
“What it comes down to is that I’ll do my job. It’s a simple starting point where I do what I do best under the circumstances to contribute to society. So long as I’m here, I’d like to enjoy this life of different happenings and different jobs. To continue is not the end goal.”
