SteamWorld Dig could have launched with a couple of additional worlds, but Image & Form ended up shelving them. The studio explained why this was done in an interview with Shigeru News.

Image & Form stated:

Yes, towards the end of the production we came under some pretty severe financial constraints – we were quickly going broke. Anthill wasn’t making much money for us anymore, and we had to be done with Dig by the end of June 2013; we would have run out of money if we had continued over summer. In Sweden, summer works like this: *everyone* goes on vacation in July, and we had to send the game for a time-consuming lotcheck process. The most economic way to do it was to let vacation and lotcheck coincide – and then pray that the game would sail smoothly through inspection.

It did, but that also meant that we had to race to finish the game by the end of June. And there were a couple of worlds that we didn’t have time to finish. It was sad in every way, but we couldn’t have finished it otherwise – we would have gone bust. In retrospect we may have benefited from including them, but we had no idea whether the game would be successful or not. It would have been ballsy to include the extra content and hoped for the best, but at the same time it would have been reckless beyond description. A lot of us have families, and it would have been harsh.

The next SteamWorld game, SteamWorld Heist, is due out this year. Look out for it on both Wii U and 3DS via the eShop.

Image & Form shared a fresh batch of screenshots from SteamWorld Heist today. We’ve added them all to our gallery below.

Additionally, we have an update on SteamWorld Heist’s release date. IGN mentioned last week that the title would launch in August, but Image & Form is sticking with a vague “2015” window for now.

So our new release window is “2015”. And it won’t be before fall this year. If you’re disappointed I do feel with you. But even worse would be you purchasing an incomplete game, right? We’d never let you experience that. And like I said above: With the extra time we will make SteamWorld Heist the best turn-based, skill-based strategy game with steampunk robots. In space.

IGN went hands on with SteamWorld Heist at GDC 2015 this week, and has now posted a preview covering the demo. The site’s article contains plenty of new information about Image & Form’s indie game.

We’ve rounded up the various tidbits below. For the full preview, head on over to IGN.

– Out in August
– Takes place 100 years in the future
– Control a robot squad
– Some bad stuff happens between the events of SteamWorld Dig and Heist that forces the Steambots into space
– Recruit other bots to join your squad mid-mission or inside intergalactic saloons
– Develop a team and choose between multiple classes
– Classes have their own weapons and abilities
– The heists take place from a familiar 2D perspective
– Move the camera with the right stick and take a quick glance of all the enemies in a room
– Move characters with the d-pad
– The turn-based aspect adds a special set of rules
– While you move the cursor, it highlights a path the Steambot will take to its next position
– Gold path means it can still fire its weapon at enemies during the same turn
– Blue path means you’d be open to attack once the turn ends
– Can take cover behind barrels and other structures
– Firing weapons happens in pseudo real-time and requires careful aim and execution
– Can shoot through floors
– It’s also possible to miss shots
– Control Pipper and Sea Brass in the demo
– Piper is the taller of the two
– Piper’s gun is weak, though it has a capable sight that can be used to ricochet bullets off of walls to hit enemies
– Sea Brass can use a hand cannon that dishes out large damage at close range, but requires you to use your own line of sight to area
– Pipper’s peashooter won’t do much damage (even with a headshot), but Sea Brass’ powerful cannon easily takes out enemies
– Recruit another robot during the mission that looks like a robotic fihs
– He fires an Uzi that recoils wildly and affects his aim
– Lots of enemy variation
– These include grunts, snipers, automated turrets, and big burly robot bosses with lots of health
– All missions in the game have a procedurally generated map
– Multiple pathways in the map
– Need to consider which teammates to bring to the battle since characters are class based
– Ex: an engineer robot can repair broken pathways and help your squad reach hidden areas to claim more swag (treasure you’re trying to collect)
– When a teammate dies, it is significant, but not as unfair as permadeath
– Image & Form tried out permadeath, but ultimately wanted a system similar to the one used in SteamWorld Dig
– The robotic fish died during IGN’s demo, but another version of him can be recruited somewhere else in the game
– Recruit allies and mission in intergalactic saloons
– In the final game: recruiting robots to join your squad, space travel between jobs and intergalactic saloons, and upgrading a squad to be stronger and more resilient than your opponents

We’ve heard talk of SteamWorld Heist coming to 3DS and Wii U in the past. But today, Image & Form made it official.


The exact order of SteamWorld Heist’s launch is currently undecided. Image & Form is planning a “staggered release strategy, meaning we’ll bring Heist to one (maybe two) of the platforms on day one, then release it for the next platform, etc.”

On another note, SteamWorld Heist will be localized into various languages.

Today, Image & Form announced that Steam Powered Giraffe is working on the soundtrack for SteamWorld Heist. The San Diego-based band will create all songs and in-game music.

Additionally, Steam Powered Giraffe will be featured in the game as a troupe that Captain Piper and her crew encounter in bars while recruiting fighters. Image & Form’s announcement also confirms that players will be able to collect sheet music containing Steam Powered Giraffe songs which can be played on a jukebox in Captain Piper’s ship.

SteamWorld Heist will be available in spring 2015. Above you’ll find a music video for “Prepare for Boarding”, the first song from SteamWorld Heist.

Image & Form has confirmed all platforms for SteamWorld Heist’s release. The game will be available on 3DS, Wii U, PC/Mac/Linux, PS4/Vita and Xbox One. Additionally, Image & Form says SteamWorld Heist is targeted for a February/March launch.
