At E3 2019, SEGA kindly invited us to their booth for some personal time with their line-up of offerings. In part five of this series, I’ll be taking a retrospective look at my experience with a new entry in a game series that still blows my mind that it even exists: Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

You can hear me chatting about all things Nintendo (and more) on our weekly podcast, available on iTunes, Spotify, and many other platforms.

IGN caught up with one of the developers behind Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 at E3 2019 and also showed off gameplay from the Switch title. Take a look at the video below.

The first trailer for Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 debuted earlier today. In it, we saw surfing as one of the included events. But whereas Mario removes his shoes and we see his feet, that isn’t the case for Sonic. The Blue Blur leaves his gear on for the event.

Polygon reached out to SEGA about that, and actually received a response. Sonic Team boss Takashi Tezuka said, “Sonic doesn’t take off his shoes (in canon).” So there’s your explanation.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 has a slightly more specific release window. It will release in November, SEGA has announced.

Hello, you beautiful Shy Guys and Shy Girls! This week on NEP, please excuse Oni’s sick voice… BUT! The gang has several great discussions you’ll want to hear. This includes Best Buy leaking games allegedly via their website, which Galen provides some extra insight on, as he used to be a terrible employee back in the day. We then discuss Labo VR and muse over what future ways Labo could be used (Oni freaks over Metroid). We then get a little heavy as we find ourselves talking about the games industry and publishers capitalizing on the social phenomenon of FOMO.

During a stage show at SEGA Fes today, it was announced that Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is in development. This will be the first entry in the Mario & Sonic series since 2016. It’ll also be the first title in the franchise for Switch.

Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games launches Winter 2019. An arcade version is also planned for 2020.
