The arrival of Golden Week usually signifies an uptick in Japanese game sales. Unsurprisingly, that was no different this year. For the week of April 28th, hardware sales rose by 112.29 percent over the week prior, in part thanks to the performance of the 3DS. However, sales were down overall year-over-year.

Media Create data reveals that software sales dipped by 68.57 percent. One could say that the lack of a major new title partially resulted in the downturn. In 2013, Nintendo released Tomodachi Life – a big seller having moved almost 210,000 copies during Golden Week.

Hardware sales also decreased by 68.21 percent compared to last week’s Golden Week period. Even though the 3DS sold well on the whole, it only managed to move 51.82 percent of last year’s total.

What does this all ultimately amount to? A 30 percent drop in overall sales.

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call is off to a fine start in Japan, especially having outsold its predecessor.

Square Enix’s rhythm game sold 80,523 copies in its first week, according to Media Create. That amounts to a 55.72 percent sell-through rate. While it may seem like a low number, Curtain Call’s initial shipment was carefully determined.

The original Theatrhythm Final Fantasy sold 67,000 copies in its first week and experienced a 90.04 percent sell-through rate. This resulted in many stores running out of copies and stock was constrained for some time, leading to potential missed sales.

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call won’t suffer the same fate. Media Create says the title will sell steadily going forward given the positive stock situation.

During the week of April 14, Japan experienced its lowest gaming hardware sales in five years. Information provided by Media Create states that the downturn can be attributed to sluggish sales of Nintendo and PlayStation consoles.

The 3DS, for instance, dropped to 19,943 for the week, which Media Create believes could be related to Nintendo’s “monthly recommended software campaign”. This began on April 26. Consumers may have been hesitant to hold off on making a 3DS purchase until the campaign kicked off.

Media Create also has some insight into the low sales of other platforms. According to the sales tracker, this may have been due to new releases being unable to sell more than a combined total of 50,000 copies during the week.
