Nicalis

On the Nicalis official twitter the team has posted an image of a few pixilated images next to a bunch of confirmed games. Among the pixilated images seems to be 1001 Spikes, VVVVVV and Code of Princess.

Nicalis is back at it again with another announcement for Switch. Today, the company announced that Save me Mr Tako: Tasukete Tako-San is coming to Switch.

Here’s an overview:

A Switch version of Night Trap hasn’t come to fruition thus far. Nintendo was apparently open to the idea, but quickly shut the door soon after the go-ahead was given.

Enter Nicalis, one of the premiere third-party publishers on Switch out of the gate. Company boss Tyrone Rodriguez has expressed interest in working with Screaming Villains to bring Night Trap to Switch. It’ll probably take some time for the project to come to fruition – if it even happens at all – but this is a hopeful first step.

Earlier today, Nicalis tweeted out a brief GIF showing Quote of Cave Story fame in a new 3D model. The idea here is that the model is being used for something, though we’re not quite sure what it is yet.

We all know about Cave Story’s ties to Nintendo platforms. This may not be for a new game, but it could still be game-related. Some folks are speculating that the model will be used for Brawlout, which has indie characters and was announced for Switch last week. We’ll just have to wait and see…

The first update for Cave Story+ has arrived. Nicalis published the patch today, which adds the option to play through the game with classic graphics. It maintains the 16:9 aspect ratio, but ditches some of the new bells and whistles like water effects and animations on character portraits.

Here’s a comparison:

Nicalis will continue updating Cave Story+ in the future. Among the additional features planned is a co-op mode in which you can play together with a friend.

Nicalis has shown quite a bit of support for Switch thus far. The publisher already shipped The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ and Cave Story+ with even more titles on the way.

As for what lies ahead, Nicalis’ Tyrone Rodriguez teased in a recent interview:

“We have several more games coming out on the Switch this year, some familiar and some brand new. You’ll have to wait and see!”

Nicalis will be bringing Blade Strangers, The End is Nigh, Ittle Dew 2, and Tiny Barbarian DX to Switch. It’ll be interesting to see what else is in store.

For awhile we had hoped that Redout would finally come to Switch this month. GameStop went as far as to list it for July 25 in one of its weekly ads. Unfortunately, July 25 is almost upon us, and that date is looking extremely unlikely.

GameStop’s own online listing has been updated to October 24. The same goes for Best Buy. Amazon has a release date of August 29.

In any case, the bottom line is that we still don’t have an official release date for Redout on Switch. Anything being listed by retailers is speculation at this time.

Thanks to Brent for the tip.

Nicalis unveiled the boxart for Tiny Barbarian DX today. It’s made by artist and character designer Susumu Matsushita, who created cover art for hundreds of Famitsu issues. He’s also the creator of the Japanese magazine’s mascot Necky the Fox, who appeared as a playable character in Super Mario Maker as a downloadable costume. Matsushita previously worked on the packaging for games such as Motor Toon Grand Prix, Maximo, and Adventure Island.

Nicalis also announced today that at retail, Tiny Barbarian DX will come with a full-color instruction manual that includes a featurette on the making of the boxart. It covers “Matsushita’s creative process, details his preferred art supplies, shows photos of him working at his drawing table and even identifies the 1960s rock instrumental that he listened to while he created the cover”.

Tiny Barbarian DX is due out in Q4 2017. Pricing will be set at $29.99.

First announced for the system in 2013, 90’s Arcade Racer was supposed to eventually end up on Wii U with Nicalis as the game’s publisher. After several years though, nothing materialized, and it has been difficult to obtain an update about the situation.

That brings us to Switch. Wii U is off the table at this point, but Nicalis appears to be bringing 90’s Arcade Racer to Nintendo’s new console instead under the name ’90s Super GP. The project is listed on the company’s revamped website.

’90s Super GP is still without a release date. But since it has a new name and is coming to a new console, hopefully it’s not too far off.

An overview of ’90s Super GP is posted below.
