Omega Force

Three different companies contributed to Hyrule Warriors to make the game possible. Omega Force and Team Ninja, two subsidiaries under Koei Tecmo, created the project directly. Nintendo also helped out in some capacity.

But what exactly was each company’s function? We now know courtesy of producer Yosuke Hayashia, who divulged to ONM this month:

Omega Force were kind enough to create the “basic Dynasty Warriors style gameplay”, Team Ninja made the “one-on one” and “boss battles” sections for us, and Nintendo gave us the “understanding required for the Zelda series”. As we were using the Zelda IP, Nintendo did detailed checks at the beginning of development, but what really stood out from a developmental perspective was Nintendo’s constant encouragement to “take a freer approach in the creation process”.

Hyrule Warriors sold through only 57.33 percent of its initial shipment in Japan, according to a report from sales tracker Media Create. It was revealed earlier this week that the game’s debut sales came in at 69,090 copies.

Hyrule Warriors sold quite a bit less than other collaborative Warriors titles like One Piece: Pirate Warriors (655,774 units), First of the North Star: Ken’s Rage (385,295 units), and Dynasty Warriors: Gundam Reborn (126,019 units). Still, as Siliconera mentions, it’s silly to draw any sort of comparisons. There are many factors here, such as how the Zelda values gameplay over its story and characters unlike Gundam and One Piece. And we also have to remember that the Wii U’s userbase in Japan is under two million.

Koei Tecmo has nearly completed the first update for Hyrule Warriors. The company is currently checking to see when it will be available, according to a message posted on the game’s Twitter account.

As previously announced, Hyrule Warriors’ first update will address various bugs/issues. Today’s tweet also confirms that the patch will add a new game mode. Further information was not shared.

It sounds like Koei Tecmo wasn’t always planning on having Ghirahim and Zant playable in Hyrule Warriors. Youske Hayashi, one of the game’s producers, told Game Informer this month that the team “originally thought of them strictly as enemy characters”. However, Koei Tecmo ended up including Ghirahim and Zant on the roster “in response to people who wanted to try playing as them”.

The addition of cuccos is another element that made its way into Hyrule Warriors thanks to fans. Hayashi teased, “They will appear during battle, and you’ll have to play the game for yourself to see what will happen.”

Along with photos, we’ve translated some of the more interesting bits from the art book.

First, here’s what was said about Link’s design:

We had many different ideas for the concept “Link running around the battlefield”. For example, we considered Japanese style armor and heavy armor, but in order to make dashing around the plains look pretty, we decided on the simple design with a blue scarf. This scarf can be worn only by a person who leads Hyrule’s royal army, so it is a special proof of one’s worth.

And Cia’s design:

Since Cia is Lana’s polar opposite with her evil heart, her main colors are also the opposite of that of Lana. By having noble metals on her sexy body, Cia’s greedy nature was expressed visually.

Lastly, Impa’s design:

In this game, in order to strengthen the Japanese style look of the Sheikah tribe, Japanese style armor was taken as one motif. Design’s details took some inspiration from Impa in Skyward Sword as well.

That’s not all from the art book. Head past the break for information about weapons and a few more story bits. I know some people tend to be very sensitive about spoiler-like information, so keep that in mind before continuing on below!

Hyrule Warriors appears to be suffering from freezing issues – at least for some players. A few users have taken to Twitter and made note of the game locking up at different occasions such as in co-op mode, on the results screen, and even the title screen.

Some Hyrule Warriors players have also encountered “processing drop” issues (seemingly a dip in frame rate). This may occur while slaying multiple enemies at once, resulting in the FPS being cut in half.

On the bright side, Koei Tecmo is aware of some of the problems affecting Hyrule Warriors. The game’s Twitter account recently said that a few bug reports had been received and the team planned on working through the Japanese holiday this past week.
