Sonic is celebrating his 25th anniversary/birthday next year. With that in mind, fans are starting to wonder about what SEGA could have in store for the Blur Blur’s big year.

We won’t be hearing about anything this year, but Sonic the Hedgehog’s PR and social media manager Aaron Webber told SEGAbits that “there’s definitely stuff in the works”. Information will be shared early next year.

Peter Warman, CEO of video game research firm Newzoo, shared an overview of Sonic’s lifetime sales in different territories with Fortune.

The Blue Blur is most popular in the United States, which is where about half of the total sales have originated from. Europe makes up another 35 percent, with the remaining 15 percent of sales stemming from other countries like Japan.

As stated by Warman:

Sonic Boom appears to be developed by Big Red Button Entertainment on Wii U and Sanzaru Games on 3DS. The former studio is comprised of ex-Naughty Dog developers while the latter team worked on Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time.

Original: SEGA’s Sonic press event is taking place as we speak, and one member of the press was kind enough to share a few tidbits from the presentation.

As expected, Sonic Boom – the upcoming animated show – is intended to act as the next-generation of SEGA’s vision for the franchise. The television show will lead to a new game on dedicated gaming systems as well as mobile platforms.

Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, and Amy are all getting new looks. Sonic and Knuckles, shown above, feature sports tape. Tails possesses a tool belt.

We’re waiting on more details and clarification on a few things, so stay tuned for further updates.

“2014 will mark a renaissance for Sonic the Hedgehog,” a press invitation from SEGA reads. The company will be hosting an event tomorrow so that announcements and future plans for Sonic can be shared.

Based on the art above Sonic Boom will be one of the highlights of the press gathering. A logical assumption would be that a game or two will be appearing as well.

Just don’t expect news out of the gate – there’s a good chance information will be embargoed.

Over the weekend, speculation regarding a new Sonic the Hedgehog game emerged. An official sign spotted at Jazwares’ Nuremburg Toy Fair booth suggested that an original title in the series would be available on the Wii U, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One sometime in 2015.

SEGA has since weighed in on the situation, and has described the recent rumor as being “incorrect”.

A statement sent to Eurogamer reads:

Jazwares, a toy maker which produces Sonic the Hedgehog products, appeared at the Nuremberg International Toy Fair last week. The company brought along the sign that seemingly reveals the existence of a new, untitled Sonic game. Assuming the image above is believable, we’ll be seeing the Blue Blur in a new title on the Wii U, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in 2015.

Sony Pictures may own the feature film rights for the Sonic franchise. Several movie-related domains were registered last week, including sonicthehedgehog-movie.com, sonicthehedgehog-movie.net and sonicthehedgehogmovie.net. If there were to be a Sonic film – which hasn’t been announced and isn’t likely at present – it would probably be an animated effort from Sony Pictures Animation.
