Very shortly, Splatoon will be adding yet another weapon. Nintendo has plans to make the Zink Mini Splatling tonight in North America, which is tomorrow for those of you in Europe.

Here’s when it’ll be going live:

Update: GamesBeat’s report has been updated. The author made an error, and actually meant amiibo. So to clarify: over 11 million amiibo have been sold in just the United States (not worldwide).

We have an extra piece of information stemming from this month’s NPD report. Nintendo has confirmed that sales of the Wii U have surpassed 11 million units. Now, even though the news comes as part of the November NPD results (which are US-focused), that figure should be worldwide.

A few months ago, Nintendo filed a trademark for what looks like a controller with a free-form display. It was just published for all to see today. Of course, we do have the GamePad which offers something slightly similar, but this would be something completely different.

Here’s an abstract:

“A non-limiting example information processing apparatus comprises a housing, and a first portion of the housing is formed in an elliptical form when viewing from the front. A display panel and a touch panel constitute one main surface of the first portion. Holes are formed in left and right end portions of the display panel and the touch panel, and two operation sticks are provided through the two holes. When viewing the first portion from the front, an area except key tops of the operation sticks becomes a display area.”

The patent makes note of a few things, including:

– Using a display panel allowing stereoscopic view
– Can make an aspect ratio thereof comparable to a ratio (16:9) of a wide screen
– Touch panel on the front surface of the display panel
– A touch panel of an electrostatic capacitance system or a resistance film system can be used
– Card slot

Finally, some images from the patent:

The patent seems to fit in with rumors about Sharp working with Nintendo on a free-form display. In the filing, it’s essentially an elliptical touch screen covering the device’s entire top surface area.

As far as the images go, don’t take them at face value. They’re really there just as a means to explain what the patent is about, so the device pictured isn’t a product that will be launched as a final product.

It’s official: Sceptile is joining the roster in Pokken Tournament. A newly-released trailer for the game confirms the character’s appearance, which you can see below.

Also confirmed are two more support characters. Electrode and Farfetch’d, who were previously rumored, will be filling in these roles.

Hyrule Warriors Legends is once again featured in this week’s issue of Famitsu. As previously mentioned, the magazine highlights a new “My Fairy” system and Great Sea map in Adventure Mode.

Fairies act as partners on your journey in Adventure Mode. If befriended, they will be in “My Fairy”. Fairies can unleash devastating attacks using fairy magic, and you can also customize special attributes. Just one can be taken into battle at a time.

The Washington Post caught up with Nintendo of America’s Scott Moffitt, the executive vice president of sales and marketing, to talk about the 3DS among other topics. He discussed the system’s performance, supporting it given the company’s commitment to mobile, and more.

According to Moffitt, thus far in 2015, “sales of the family of Nintendo 3DS hardware in America are actually ahead of last year’s pace.” He also proclaimed that the “3DS is here to stay” in light of discussion about handhelds and their continued relevance to the market with casual gaming on smartphones on the rise.

Below are his full comments:

“Nintendo 3DS is here to stay. Let me throw out a number that might surprise you. So far, on a global basis, Nintendo 3DS has sold more hardware than PS4 and Xbox One—combined. Most people find this shocking.

Obviously we don’t deny the impact of smart devices on the gaming market. But it’s a mistake to consider this a zero-sum game. Clearly gaming on smart devices and gaming on Nintendo 3DS can happily coexist, to the benefit of all gamers. The fact is, playing games on two very different hardware platforms means options for two very different kinds of game play. The inclusion of multiple control buttons on Nintendo 3DS allows a much deeper and more sophisticated type of play.”
