Last week, Japanese magazine Famitsu published a fairly lengthy Project Octopath Traveler interview. Producer Masashi Takahashi from Square Enix and director Keisuke Miyauchi from Acquire were brought in to discuss the Switch exclusive.

One point mentioned is how the team started this project with Tomoya Asano, the chief producer who also worked as producer of the Bravely series. The primary concept is “going on a journey.” The player would choose one of the eight protagonists, role-plays as them, and freely has a journey with the world.

New amiibo for Pearl and Marina wasn’t the only Splatoon 2-related news to have come out of Niconico Chokaigi.

First, a new stage has been revealed known as Goby Arena. The only information we have is that it’s “a state-of-the-art basketball arena with a food court, VIP seating and more.” Nintendo also showed off the Dark Tetra Dualies, which let you perform four consecutive rolls and shoot while rolling.

Here’s a look at the new stage and weapon:

At Niconico Chokaigi today, Nintendo revealed two new amiibo for Splatoon 2. Pearl and Marina will both be getting their own figures. By purchasing the amiibo, you’ll be able to take pictures with the idols and obtain special gear.

Here’s a trailer:

The Pearl and Marina amiibo are heading to stores later this year. In North America, they’ll be sold in a 2-pack for $24.99.

A few Nintendo-published games have seen DLC over the past year. Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and Fire Emblem Warriors are among the titles that have received new content following release.

One game not included in that is Super Mario Odyssey. The game is getting a free update, but actual paid DLC has not yet been announced. Nintendo isn’t against the idea, however.

Update (2/11): Eurogamer has updated its original report, and says that “Bandai Namco’s Japan studio is also working on the project, with the intention it will now take the lead on its development while Singapore moves to focus on another Switch game”. The site does not elaborate further beyond this. However, Eurogamer now seems to believe that Bandai Namco Japan is the lead studio on Metroid Prime 4 as opposed to Bandai Namco Singapore.

Original (2/9): Rumors of Bandai Namco working on Metroid Prime 4 picked up this week following a discovery on a LinkedIn profile page. This person listed an “unannounced IP (first person shooter/adventure exclusive to the Nintendo Switch)”, which would fit the bill for the project.

Eurogamer now says that Bandai Namco Singapore is indeed behind Metroid Prime 4. The site’s sources say that they’re the “lead studio on the game in collaboration with Nintendo.” Bandai Namco Singapore has some talent from the now defunct LucasArts Singapore, who previously worked on the cancelled Star Wars 1313.

You know what’s sort of crazy? The last time an original Retro Studios-made game released was in 2014 with Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. We’re now coming full circle with a port on Switch later this year.

Retro often works in the shadows. We don’t often hear about the company much, and it’s anybody’s guess as to what they’re working on currently. Four years in between games is quite awhile, and fans are very much interested in Retro’s next title.

Could Retro be developing another Donkey Kong game? A resurrected Nintendo IP? A new IP of their own? Just thinking about the possibilities are exciting. Let us know about the ideas you have for Retro’s future in the comments below.

System: 3DS
Release date: February 13, 2018
Developer: Atlus
Publisher: Atlus

It amazes me how even after years of incredible games from a system’s lifecycle, we have been consistently impressed with the “cherry on top”, if you will, at the very end that leaves its mark and gives players one last hoorah before the inevitable new generation. It was Zelda: Breath of the Wild on Wii U for example, and now Radiant Historia on 3DS. With Radiant Historia, we can revisit one of the titles that made the DS so great, and gladly add it to the 3DS’ ineffable library of RPGs. It’s an encore that shows nothing but respect for the craft, the legacy of the DS and 3DS, as well as the genre as whole.
