Limited Run says its numbered Nintendo Switch 2 physical releases will be full game on cartridge, not game-key cards

At PAX East 2025, Limited Run Games commented on the ongoing discussion surrounding physical cartridges for Switch 2. The company, known for bringing both retro and modern digital titles to physical media, confirmed that its own releases should include the full game on the cartridge. The only exception applies to partnership titles that aren’t part of its numbered lineup, where the decision will be left to the game’s developer or publisher.

Since the discovery of game key cards, the issue has sparked concern and some dissatisfaction among fans due to the growing trend of physical releases requiring downloads or shipping incomplete versions. This is especially true with the continued rise in game file sizes, as seen with Limited Run Games’ own announcement that the Raidou Remastered collector’s edition would include a game card. However, that was apparently SEGA’s decision and was not a part of Limited Run’s numbered lineup.

Game key cards function as a “key” to download the full game onto the console via the internet. Instead of containing the game data directly, the card holds a key that, when inserted, allows the game to be downloaded, similar to an activation code for other platforms.
