NIntendo eShop changes

Nintendo made various additions and changes to Switch with the system’s new 20.0.0 update, and it turns out that the modifications also apply to the eShop, including the store’s charts.

In the past, rankings were based on top downloads over a two-week period. Now, however, Nintendo says that the Switch eShop charts are displayed based on top revenue over the past three days.

Initial reports indicate that it’s tougher for indie games to appear. However, it deemphasizes low-quality games – or “slop”, as some people refer to these releases. Titles taking advantage of massive discounts to land on the Nintendo eShop charts will now have a more difficult time making that happen.

The same change on the Switch eShop charts also impacts the “Great Deals” section. You’ll now be less likely to see things like AI shovelware. The downside is, again, that AAA games get more of the focus, which hurts discoverability for indie games.

In other news, there are more subtle tweaks to the Nintendo eShop. For one thing, everything is now red – including the initial load screen. The store is also now capable of display Nintendo Switch 2 games.
