Nintendo on decision to use LCD screen for Switch 2 instead of OLED
Just like the original Nintendo Switch, Switch 2 features an LCD screen. Some had hoped that the system would end up going the OLED route, but that wasn’t meant to be.
Nintendo’s Tetsuya Sasaki has now explained the decision to go with an LCD screen over the OLED as part of a recent interview. Sasaki indicated that the LCD space has seen “a lot of advancements” and also pointed out that the OLED version of Nintendo Switch didn’t support HDR, which is built in for Switch 2.
Sasaki shared the following in that interview:
“Now there’s a lot of advancements that have been made in LCD technology during development. We took a look at the technology that was available to us now and after a lot of consideration we decided to stick to LCD. Even with the OLED version of Nintendo Switch, we didn’t have compatibility support for HDR, but that’s something we have the support for now.”
Another aspect about Nintendo Switch 2’s screen is its resolution. This time around, it’s capable of supporting 1080p. All Nintendo Switch models stopped at 720p in portable mode.
