Nintendo shutting down Switch eShop, network services in China in 2026
Nintendo has announced the closure of network services for Nintendo Switch in China, which includes the eShop. This will be going into effect starting in 2026.
The first part of the shutdown begins on March 31, 2026. On that day, games and other software can no longer be purchased. Then on May 15, it will not be possible to download titles, redeem codes, or obtain DLC. Additionally, on the same day, other network services will be ending.
Those that own a Nintendo Switch in China – as well as a WeChat accounted tied to the console – will be eligible for a promotion involving free games. Between November 27, 2024 and March 31, 2026, system owners can claim up to four titles via digital download. The lineup includes Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain, Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training for Nintendo Switch, Kirby Star Allies, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Mario Tennis Aces, New Pokemon Snap, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu / Eevee, Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario Party, and Yoshi’s Crafted World.
Note that today’s news strictly applies to China – as noted by Nintendo. Things operate differently in the region as Tencent works in collaboration with Nintendo when it comes to Nintendo Switch sales in the country. China has a much more limited eShop compared to the rest of the world, including a smaller selection of games.
