Nintendo Switch 2 chip manufactured by Samsung, pushing for OLED display with future upgrade
According to a report from Bloomberg, Samsung Electronics is manufacturing the main semiconductor chips for Nintendo Switch 2.
The outlet says that the NVIDIA-designed chip will allow for a production pace in which Nintendo could ship over 20 million units by March 2026. Samsung also has the capabilities to increase chip production, but Switch 2 shipments are dependent on assemblers.
This marks a bit of a change for Nintendo. With the current Nintendo Switch, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing manufactured the chipsets. However, Bloomberg says that this time around, “Nvidia’s chips are optimized for Samsung’s manufacturing systems, which is what prompted the switch”. The publication adds that this could work in Nintendo’s favor as it won’t have to compete with other companies for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing’s production capacity.
Nintendo recently said that it anticipates selling 15 million Nintendo Switch 2 units during the current fiscal year. Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser believes the company will be able to meet demand in the United States.
Bloomberg closes out its report by claiming that Samsung “has also pushed for OLED panels to be used when Nintendo refreshes the Switch 2 in future”. Just like the current Nintendo Switch OLED, Switch 2 could get its own similar revision down the road.
