Nintendo Switch 2 GameChat requires a phone number to use

If you plan on using GameChat on Nintendo Switch 2, you’ll need a phone number. That news has been spotted in the official terms for the feature.

Nintendo doesn’t go into detail about why a phone number is required for GameChat on Switch 2, but the reason seems fairly clear. The company always takes the protection of its players seriously – especially younger ones. If someone uses GameChat in a nefarious way, it’s a bit easier for Nintendo to block them and prevent them from returning.

Nintendo previously spoke about safety for minors with GameChat. For one thing, minors can only chat with friends that their parents have approved. Additionally, even for adults, they won’t randomly find themselves talking with a stranger. A report feature is also included.

GameChat is among the big features Nintendo has been promoting for Switch 2. Full communication with others is possible. Aside from voice chat, if you own a camera, it’s possible to show your face. You can also stream your game to others. Up to twelve people can be in a group and chat while playing games.
