That one guy who gave Odyssey a 9 though..

  • Ardisan

Really wish I knew what each number was for.

    • Evan Gustavson

4 different review scores from 4 different reviewers.

  • Princess_Eevee9

Famitsu continues to show they’re just completely retarded. Like seriously this game is a perfect scores all across the board! Obviously I haven’t played it, yet the Trailers, Demos, etc. What in the world?!?

    • GoldenTriforce

How dare they give the game a near perfect score which barely anything gets, because one person thought it was an outstanding game and not the greatest thing in the world. I can’t believe a person whose job is to give their honest opinion gave their honest opinion.

      • Princess_Eevee9

I can’t believe an “honest person” their “honest” opinion when a freaking Soccer game is rated higher than a remake of one of the best RPG games? Do you ever think before you comment? Famitsu is a crappy Review Magazine that’s a shell of it’s former self, only worth is getting gaming news and surprise reveals.

        • ben

I hate when gamers get snobby about CoD or FIFA like they are bad games.. they are not.

          • Princess_Eevee9

Perhaps it was a tad rude but they’re not. Depends on the game in the series though, heard some are rather well-received?

          • Justin McQuillen

Yeah they are. CoD is trash.

          • ben

I don’t like it but that does not make them bad games.. just not our cup of tea.

        • GoldenTriforce

Who cares who gave the score? A 9.75 is a ****ing outstanding score. Even a 9.0 is an outstanding score. The point of reviews is for criticism and opinion. They exist to inform the consumer about the assets and flaws of a game in order to allow for the consumer to make better purchasing decisions. They don’t exist to give the developer a pat on the back or make fans happy by giving them 100s. If the developer found problems with the game (which they likely did, no game is perfect, the greatest game of all time is still incredibly flawed), then they should be rating it a lower score…. but they gave it 9. A 9 is a superb score, heck an 8 is a very good score. Even for one of the most hyped games of the year, or even decade, which is a contender for GoTY, an 8 would have been a good score. Only one person gave it a 9, and this is still one of the highest rated main series 3D Marios, in terms of Famitsu scores. Higher than Galaxy 1 & 2, two of the top rated games of all time. You can dislike Famitsu all you want, but its absurd to complain that a game was literally one point away from the highest score possible. If I got a 97.5% on an exam, I would be celebrating. Odyssey is an exam for Nintendo, and I presume that they are really proud of a 9.75. I think they expected something good but I doubt they even expected a 95%.

Also yes, I do agree that SMT being scored lower than a yearly sports simulation is very odd, but that was not the topic of debate.

          • Princess_Eevee9

You can celebrate a lousy 97.5% I’ll be mad and more motivated to study so I can improve for perfect marks.

The rest of your statement eh just no. You do you though.

          • GoldenTriforce

Oh yeah always strive for perfection but celebrate success as well.

    • Reggie

      Grow up.

      • Princess_Eevee9

        You first?

        • Reggie

Said the person who b****ed just because Odyssey didn’t get a perfect score even when it still got the highest of those listed.

          • starscream1180

            hes trolling.

    • Emperor X

So Odyssey gets 10/10/9/10 and BoTW 10/10/10/10? They truly are retarded.

      • Princess_Eevee9

I know what they gave Legend of Zelda but their scoring is illogical. It’s the same as when Pokémon Black & Pokémon White got a per

      • why?

    • Darkrobot

Excuse me this is just a game review, I’d like to ask you to refrain from saying that word restarted. It certainly does not apply in the situation you are using it. If you are willing, I’d like to share with you how it has progressed from a medical term into the vile, hateful way it is used far too often now. At the least consider what you said and why.

  • cloud36426

    I’m ready for Odyssey

  • GoldenTriforce

SMT is an 8.25 but Fifa is a 9.25, huh Famitsu?

    • PRIMUS

They actually put in work for this FIFA. FIFA18 is legendary.

      • GoldenTriforce

Yeah, but Shin Megami Tensei. Whether you like Sports or not, its Shin Megami Tensei.

        • R.Z.

Yeah, but SMT is a lazy remake with new elements that look out of place … the score is higher than I personally expected for … that.

          • GoldenTriforce

Yeah Reviews are subjective. Who knows how good it is until we get our hands on it.

  • ヨッシー

Famitsu gave Super Mario 64 a 39,Super Mario Galaxy a 38 and Super Mario Galaxy 2 a 37. So not surprising but not understandable or acceptable, causing these game and I’m sure Odyssey would be one of them are pure master pieces which are way more better than some 40 perfect score games reviewed by Famitsu

    • wytxus

But who would care about a reviewer banished by metacritic

    • Evan Gustavson

To be fair, Nintendogs has a perfect 40, so the bar is low.
Nearly any game is “way more better than some perfect 40 score games” since lolNintendogs is one of them.
I could list a mediocre at best game and still have listed a game that beats a perfect 40

      • R.Z.

Maybe Nintendogs was perfect as a petting simulator though ?
I have no idea myself cause I didn’t play it, but people who enjoy that kind of stuff really liked the game.

        • masterjedi

Nintendogs was perfect. I liken it to someone saying a cookie can’t be perfect because a soufflé is harder to execute. I have never played a pet simulator anywhere near as good as Nintendogs.

      • Symbol de Au

        I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Nintendogs…

    • Exy

Famitsu also gave Resident Evil 6 a 39/40, so they don’t always know what’s what in terms of what we think what’s what.

  • ben

Evil within 2.. come on Bethesda bring it to the switch! I love this game!

    • Operative

I hope so! And it certainly seems possible with Doom, Skyrim, and Wolfenstein II coming out. It’s exciting

  • Blanco8x8

    • ben

I know.. cuphead actually getting the scores it deserves.

  • ben

LOL I just saw that the graffiti says new Dank city.

  • Rodrigo Coelho Costa Junior

Oh no! does that mean its a flop? Super Mario Flopyssey

    • Nyanadventurer the second

That’s 97,5%. Who would think a game rated that high is a flop?

      • Rodrigo Coelho Costa Junior

people on the itnernet man.. they complain about anything. (my original comment was total irony, I think you got that)

  • Operative

I sure hope no one gets upset over a single 9/10 in a sea of inevitable tens.

That’s what I would say if I didn’t already know it was 100% going to happen.

  • JacksomLOVESNintendo

Considering they gave FIFA 18 a near perfect score, I’m not sure how reliable Famitsu is. And this isn’t the first time I’ve questioned their opinions either, but this just feels… off.

    • R.Z.

You have to adjust it to your own stadards, it’s like those magazines from the 90’s that rated games on a scale from 60% to 100% (with Nintendo games getting their own 90-100% special scale)

  • Ninty Kad

Lol. “Let’s check with the judges on that performance. 10. 10! 10!! OOOOHH and a 9 from the russian judge.” 😛

  • TDude73

I blame the Russians for giving Super Mario Odyssey a 9. LOL Nevertheless, congrats to Nintendo. Super Mario Odyssey is Famitsu’s Game of the Week!

  • Ser2k2
  • ¯_(ツ)_/¯

    Super Mario 64 – 39/40
    Super Mario Sunshine – 38/40
    Super Mario Galaxy – 38/40
    Super Mario Galaxy 2 – 37/40
    Super Mario 3D Land – 38/40
    Super Mario 3D World – 38/40
    Super Mario Odyssey – 39/40

    That’s Famitsu for you!

    • MagcargoMan

Sunshine and 3D Land in no way deserve to be rated that high.

      • Bradley

        They weren’t that bad, maybe a 35?

        • MagcargoMan

I never said they were bad but they don’t hold a candle to 64 and Galaxy. Sunshine was rather rushed and incomplete. I’d say it should be around 32 or 33. 3D Land was alright but it’s just missing something.

      • MajoraMan28

        100% agreed
Famitsu usually gives the 3D Mario games lower than average scores. Given how inconsistent they are with these and other reviews, I would take it as a grain of salt, even though it’s the highest rated Mario game of all time currently.

Also, funny how Galaxy 2, which managed to get more perfect scores than any other Mario game (only behind BotW in that regard compared to other games), was the lowest scoring game for them.
Yeah, I think EDGE has been more consistent with the critical analysis I identify with.

        • what the f***? go look up what inconsistent means.

          • MajoraMan28

Maybe you should reread my post. They are inconsistent on how they analyse critically a particular game. A title with great technical prowess sometimes is recognized by them, other times it passes by unnoticed. This inconsistent critical analysis is what I’m talking about. No need to be rude due to your lack of interpretation skills.

    • R.Z.

Incredibly enough, for once, I’m in total in agreement with Famitsu regarding which are the best 3D Mario Games and which are the worse (except for Odyssey that I still haven’t played, but I can see myself liking it a whole lot).
On my personnal scale the scores would go from 30 to 40 though …

Zelda BOTW got a 40/40 so… RIP Mario Odyssey /s

  • Donovan Tull

So 4 reviewer’s have given it a 10, and one has given it a 9.
If reviews continue going like this, Mario Odyssey might be able to compete with Breath of the Wild after all….

  • Tlink7

Surprised Famitsu didn’t just go for 10/10/10/10 like they usually do 😛

    • Bradley

      Zelda was special

There is a Zelda Fan Boy at Famitsu. Hating on Mario because he was coming for Link’s title.

  • Melatelo

    OK that’s just cruel

  • masterjedi

What a turnabout I see here. When Edge’s review came out, there was lots of criticism for the perfect score. Now Famitsu’s review is out and there’s lots of complaining because it DIDN’T get a perfect score.

  • starscream1180

after beating cuphead just last night , i have no idea how the game can get anything under a 9 , game is basically perfect , best 20 bucks ever spent.

    • janco tianno

Not really. Far from perfect, it is a very very short game. If you are a good platform gamer, you can finish it in one day. The boss battles are cool, but they are equally hard to beat (no learning curve…). The run and gun levels have a very, very simple design with a lot of obstacles and enemies just to make you die many times and spend more than 1 minute to beat them. It is a very good game, amazing graphics, nice controls, but short and with simple design. But it is worth to pay 20 dollars on that for sure.

      • MagcargoMan

“The run and gun levels have a very, very simple design with a lot of obstacles and enemies just to make you die many times and spend more than 1 minute to beat them.”
That’s pretty much how run and gun games work though. Ever played Metal Slug?

  • Moon

New Super Mario Bros. Wii: 40
    Super Mario Odyssey: 39

    ok i guess..
