Nintendo reveals the most played games on Switch since launch in North America

Posted on January 5, 2018 by (@NE_Brian) in News, Switch

Nintendo has sent out new data about Switch, revealing the most played games on Switch since launch based on data collected from North America.

The regular heavy first-party hitters like Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey are naturally towards the top of the list. Other games such as Stardew Valley, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+, and NBA 2K18 also make the list.

The full top twenty can be found below:

1. Zelda: Breath of the Wild
2. Super Mario Odyssey
3. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
4. Splatoon 2
5. Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition
6. Stardew Valley
7. Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle
9. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
10. The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+
11. NBA 2K18
12. Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2
13. Fire Emblem Warriors
14. LEGO City Undercover
15. Sonic Mania
16. Pokken Tournament DX
17. 1-2 Switch
18. FIFA 18
19. Disgaea 5 Complete
20. Rocket League

Nintendo says that the list above is based on the cumulative number of hours that North American players have spent in-game.

Nintendo, plz give us an Activity Log that’s at least as good as the 3DS’s. It’s really cool seeing what your friends are playing, but why can we only see a vague amount of time that we’ve been playing our games, WHEN THE INFO IS CLEARLY BEING KEPT.

But this is a cool list. Nice

    • DonSerrot

I used to have a group of friends who would post their 3DS activity logs at the end of the year and talk about why they were so into the games that made the tops of their lists.

      • JasonBall

I need better friends then, thats awesome

      • Dunnington

That’s so cool. I would love to do something like that, but my friends wouldn’t be into it. Right now I just keep track of everything on

  • Fans of Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
    You disappoint me.
I have 320 hours in the game.
    Where ya at?

    • Pepperkeet

      160here I’m doing my part

    • Heliandro

      170 here

The game just recently came out, I’m like 145hrs in so far.

    • Apfel

    • Aline Piroutek

      I bought a Switch yesterday. 4 hours.

    • Segata Sanshiro

      220. beat the game a couple weeks ago. I always do my part this series. 600 in XC1 and 800 in XCX.

    • Don Zaloog

I’m at 277 hours right now.

    • Mark

Cumulative hours, by all players – not average hours. Cumulative means that games which sold to a wider audience or released earlier in the year would accumulate more hours.

I wish they did a top twenty of games with the highest average hours played per copy owned. That would be far more interesting.

      • DiscoGentleman

With that said, it’s incredible impressive for Skyrim.
        That’s great.

        • Mark

Yeah, I’ve contributed a good deal to that. I’ve been pretty much living in Tamriel since November 17th.

      • Then what your excuse for Rocket League being at the bottom.

        • Mark

Uh, ’cause it released in mid-November, but it’s a massively popular multiplayer game that only costs $20. It would be purchased by a wide amount of people, who would be playing it a great amount. The fact that it’s on the list at all is a testament to how popular Rocket League is.

    • Kyoko

      130 hours

    • Re4gNarsil

180 I’m not slacking lol; to be honest I’m shocked it’s not somewhere on this list 🙁

    • GoldenTriforce

Games been out for a month, there likely isn’t enough data to add it.

      • Rocket League says hi and it at the bottom

        • GoldenTriforce

Rocket League has been out for 2 months.

          • not it hasn’t

          • GoldenTriforce

It came out Nov 14 on Switch, which is 1 week less than 2 months.

          • That still isn’t two months

          • GoldenTriforce

The point was never 2 months, the point was around 2 months is longer than around 1 months. We have no idea when Nintendo calculated this data, it could have been before the year even ended. My point was Xenoblade has been played a lot but it won’t appear on the chart yet

    • Francisco Avila

    • Kid X

The game is telling me 150 but the Switch is telling me 95.

    • R.Z.

“60 hours or more”, and I have it since launch minus a few days.
I’m doing the best I can, I’m giving it some of my sleeptime even.

    • Force

You’re also forgetting that this is “just” North America. It could quite possibly be that the rest of the world adds up to put Xenoblade somewhere at the top.

      • Aline Piroutek

      • Tlink7

Nah, Xenoblade does much better in NA than any other region

    • Owain

I only had 3 days to play and got 43 hours I’m sure I’ll get up there when I get back from training

    • FElord

I only got it last week and was also playing odyssey at the time but I’m about 90 hours in.

    • Tlink7

Gee, I wonder why a game that came out recently didn’t rank very high in a list that has been created with cumulative playtime data from march onwards…

      All boobs no brains :3

    • Ari Magrini

  • Nintendo South Wales

I know 1-2 Switch was a launch title but somehow i still find myself surprised to see it make the top 20.

    • Dylan W

I was surprised too but then I remembered that it’s sold over 1 million copies.

        Casuals. = p

        • Dylan W

I didn’t contribute to that number. 1-2 Switch looked like overpriced trash to me.

    • theFooFighter

I really think that’s all there is to it. It was a launch title at a time when the switch had like 4 notable games. I feel like if a 1,2 switch sequel came out in 2019 no one would give a f*ck

      • DiscoGentleman

        Hey, look: a dead horse.

        • theFooFighter

          Not going to deny that

    • R.Z.

It’s like people actually play it with friends or some such nonsense.
I should try getting myself some friends someday, you know, just to see what the big fuss is about.

  • Gilmar Venancio

“Bu-bu-bu-but Nintendo fans dont play third-party games”

  • Puffdaddy

You people disappoint me playing 1-2 Switch more than Xenoblade Chronicles 2. You should be ashamed of yourselves.
    Cool list otherwise tho

I know bro but Xenoblade 2 only just recently came out.

    • Heard it was a very hard to learn game, packed with complex systems, so avoided it. I’m too friggin’ old for that sorta stuff anymore. I got nowhere in the WiiU Xenoblade. Which is sad, as I was really wanting to give it a whirl.

      • Segata Sanshiro

It has depth but not hard to learn at all

        • Not what I’m hearing from some people I know who play tons of JRPGs. If it’s too much for them, it’s sure as heck too much for me.

          • Segata Sanshiro

I have beaten the game dude. It’s really not hard to learn. If you can press a button congrats you know how to use the attacks.

          • Is it more or less hard than the one on WiiU?

          • Indielink

            WAYYYYYYYYY more simple than XCX.

          • Jacob Groves

Honestly it is so easy to learn. Go buy game and prove yourself. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Some quests you might need to exploring without quest marks because they want you exploring and find out yourself or go check walkthrough, forums etc… over google to find out where quest need to complete. Most of quests show mark where to reach point. Well like many western and japanese role play games does those days. 🙂 🙂

Anyway combat gameplay and exploring is not too hard and they are so easy to understand learn. Higher level enemies is simply as you just avoid and running pass or away from them if you have to reach quest or something ofc you knew once you reach higher level than enemies then back to them and kill them off. Like many RPGs. 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

Enjoy XC 2!! If your going get it now. 🙂

          • R.Z.

            Much less, and better explained.
The game doesn’t throw everything it has at you the moment you start, and there aren’t that many imbricated systems going on, it’s pretty straightforward.

          • shani

It’s a lot easier than XC.

          • Segata Sanshiro

            Less. Very streamlined.

          • Bakelith

The game is not really that complex and there’s no difficulty anyway, you can practically run the whole game using the initial blades and not equiping any accessory (including Aux cores).

      • shani

Actually XC2 is really accessible and streamlined. There no complex systems like in XC (which I enjoyed a lot!).
If XC was too big and complex for you, you’ll probably like XC2 better. ^^

      • FElord

It is has depth but it teaches you everything step by step. Besides the most you’ll do in combat is move around and press 1 of 4 attack buttons and 2 support buttons. And spam or time one button press when special attacks occur, otherwise it’s all about attacking to build up specials to build up more specials and combine them into combos.

The best way I can put it is it may seems chaotic, but everything is under control and can be planned out.

    • Tlink7

Casual game that has been out since march vs a niche game that has only been out a few weeks… I wonder which one will rank higher 😛

  • moviereviewrsports

Nintendo fanboys where is doom lol

    • theFooFighter

The worst thing about doom is that it launched with a 2 week period of Mario, Skyrim, la noire, sonic and resident evil. I think it’s the best of that bunch but at the same time it’s not that massive of a franchise but it’s going against some of the biggest gaming ip ever.

      • Dylan W

I’ve bought most of the physical 3rd party games on Switch so far so I’m set for a while. Currently playing Doom, Resident Evil Revelations, and BotW.

        • theFooFighter

I’m in the same boat. I have a backlog I need to tackle at this point. Like I’m just now finishing fire emblem warriors even though I bought it nearly 2 weeks ago

      • AJK

It’s sad isn’t it? It’s a fantastic port and playing Doom portable feels like the future.

        • Dylan W

Keep in mind that Doom got announced just a couple months before it was released whereas Skyrim and L.A. Noire had been known for a while.

        • theFooFighter

It’s so good but that release date. They should have waited until early December like Xenoblade

        • Nhat Anh Hoang

Yeah, it is sad that TLoH Trail of Cold Steel 3 on ps4 only sold half of the second even though this game is built from ground up for ps4 while the second is vita then port to ps3 mean ps4 game is a lot more expensive

    • Somnophore

I surprised myself actually when I saw I’ve been playing it for 55 hours (and counting), making it to the top 5 of games I’ve played the most. It was somewhat of an impulse purchase.

    • R.Z.

      On a shelf.
I totally plan to try it out someday, I swear !
But I have XC2 simmering and can’t leave it unattended.

    • Nhat Anh Hoang

I don’t know, maybe they are busy discussing whether should buy the masterpiece Knack 2 or Titanfall 2 while the shovelware TLoh Trail of Cold Steel 3 only sold half of the second

  • theFooFighter

Rocket league, disgaea, 2k, Skyrim, Lego City, dragon ball and stardew. I feel pretty confident about the future of 3rd party games on the switch

  • Segata Sanshiro

Why are people not playing Xenoblade 2!? It’s amazing!

    • theFooFighter

Remember this is most played through 2017, Xenoblade looses simply because it launched in December. Keep in mind rocket league had been within the top 3 on the eShop for damn near 2 months now but it’s #20 because it launched like mid November

  • Bruno_Ostara

Great to see Arms up there <3

    • FutureFox

      People are up in ARMS!

  • awng782

Seems like the sports games do well when it comes to engagement, even if sales aren’t that high,as neither NBA 2K18 nor FIFA 18 were among the Top 20 best selling Switch games in North America as of min-December.

Meanwhile, games like Bomberman R, Puyo Puyo Tetris, and USF2 are not on this list despite being among the Top 20 best selling Switch games in North America as of mid-December.

  • bakedapplepie

Zelda has been out the longest, so naturally I thought it would be on top. But it really is my most played game at around 250 hours now, love that game.

    • R.Z.

Pretty impressive that Mario is so close, though.
I know I spend some 150 hours less on Mario than on Zelda, so you gotta wonder whether it has reached the second place thanks to a much greater succes or the second place is actually pretty far from the top.

  • Force

To ya’ll doing an hour-boast over XC2, you do realize that putting your Switch in sleep mode has it count those hours as well right? 😛 With that said, I’ve got 235 hours and only 1 boss left to kill and 1 rare blade to gather and I put my Switch off completely.

    • Mark

My Switch lives in Sleep mode.

Kinda curious how many hours I’ve put in not playing games.

      • Force

I bet those would be quite a bit then.

    • Tlink7

Erm source? I put my Switch in sleep mode all the time and I don’t have five gazillion hours on all my games xD

      • Bart

It’s just this game he means I think, the ingame timer sometimes keeps going when you suspend the game, seems to happen mostly when you suspend during a cutscene.

Disgaea 5 has a similar issue, some of the timers in the statistics screens just keep counting when suspended too.

      • Force

I see conflicting reports about this, but so far I know, it does. Plus, you have to have your game active while you sleep mode 😛 You can still put your game off, then sleep mode.

    • R.Z.

Does it count hours when you go to the home menu first ?
I wonder whether my “measly” 70 hours are pumped up …

      • Force

Well, I’m not entirely sure, but I do know that my hours are from not having the game on at all due to the Switch being off.

  • Kenshin0011

    1-2 Switch was a mistake.

    • TDude73

Your comment is never a mistake… you are the truth.

  • shani

How on earth is XC2 missing from that list (when other November titles are in the top 20)?!

    • Mark

It’s cumulative hours, not average hours, and XC2”s position as a physical release in December means many of the Switch owners who own the game have only had a week and a half to play it.

  • Zeebor

Disgaea made it in under 1-2 Switch. I wanna know what the math is on this because I don’t see 1-2 getting longer play sessions than 1 hour a piece.

    • Tlink7

Don’t you? I spent ages as a kid playing Wii sports with my family, I imagine it must be similar with 1 2 Switch. Plus, Disgaea is wayyyy more nice

      • dbizal

But 1-2 Swith is crap and Wii Sports was actually good.

        • Tlink7

What’s the difference between the two would you say?

          • Mii’s made everything perfect.

          • Tlink7

          • Mii’s made everything perfect, but not everyone did perfectly by Mii’s. x’D

          • dbizal

1-2 Switch is a collection of rubbish mini games.

Wii Sports is a collection of sporting activities which are good. Tennis is good. Bowling is good. Golf is good.

          • Tlink7

I think you could also call Wii Sports a collection of rubbish minigames 😉

          • dbizal

But good rubbish minigames lol 😉

          • Tlink7

            Opinions 😀 I haven’t played 1,2 Switch yet

          • dbizal

Oh gosh… Well there’s the difference lol. I bought it on Launch… Wish I didn’t.

          • Tlink7

I probably won’t until it is super cheap. Quite curious on how effective that HD ramble is, however

    • Tide

Probably total hours accumulated between all users. Disgaea wasn’t widely popular as most of these other titles but it was the main title ppl flocked too during the early game drought.

  • SetzerGabbiani

I added to that Fire Emblem Warriors total.
