Pokemon Switch will be “a traditional find, battle, train type experience”

Posted on June 18, 2017 by (@NE_Brian) in News, Switch

Some fans were a bit disappointed with this month’s Pokemon Direct due to a lack of news regarding a mainline Pokemon title for Switch. During E3 this week though, Nintendo remedied that. Nothing was shown, but during the Nintendo Spotlight broadcast, Pokemon president Tsunekazu Ishihara announced that Game Freak has started work on a core title for Switch.

Bloomberg asked Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime about the project following the presentation. He naturally didn’t have much to say, though he did note that it’s “a traditional find, battle, train type experience”.

While you wait for the first true Pokemon game for Switch, Pokken Tournament DX launches on September 22. Pokemon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon are also due out on November 17.

I’m happy about this, I was not sure about if there was going to be a core game.

They straight up said it’s a core game when they announced it though. 9m 25s

      • Auragar

Indeed, this seems like a troll post.

    • Auragar

It was announced as a core game… not sure if serious or joking.

    • Exy

The fact that they point this out this way tells me that it won’t be an RPG like the past games.

      • Blake Good

I want gen 8 to be different from gens 1-7, in terms of gameplay. S&M was just the same as X&Y, and the previous 5 gens before it.

  • Francesco Gentile

This is going to sell a LOT of Switches!!

    • Odali

If they can be in stock!

    • Auragar

Not that there seems to be any issues selling them currently as they keep going out of stock, but yeah.

  • Khaaaaan!!!
    • Auragar

Definitely won’t look like that so don’t go in expecting that.

  • KnightWonder

Thank god. I didn’t really like the shadow pokemon from the previous two pokemon console games.

    • TechTinker11

Understandable, I personally enjoyed them more then the core handheld games, I only play them for the new Pokemon and regions pretty much.

    • Auragar

Agreed, but this was never gonna be that, as those were not GameFreak developed mainline titles like Pokemon Switch will be.

  • Gamingfan

Kids will be really excited for this.

  • キロ

    Yay I guess!

  • awng781

A “core RPG Pokemon game” sorta automatically implies that the game will be a “a traditional find, battle, train type experience”.

    • Auragar

Indeed, this was a pointless question, and answer but some people are stupid but really even with this answer some people are still stupid. They think GameFreak would make a spin-off and that the wording some how at all even slightly hints at a spin-off. It is nonsense.

  • only instead of pokemon, we have re-tooled it to where you find, battle and train japanese pop idols

    • Ninty Kad

Your not gonna let that pop idol thing go are ya? 😛

      • i just thought it was funny how people were mad
i bought tms fe last night
        hope it’s real good

        • Ninty Kad

I heard it’s good, Hope you have fun

        • Auragar

It is fun, though definitely not what SMTxFE should’ve been and I think if Atlus designed the game without references to FE and expanded it a bit further the game would’ve been amazing, not that it is bad as is, but yeah.

        • Blackbishop

Why would someone be mad because you bought a game for your Wii U? :/

          • no they were mad because the game wasn’t what they expected

          • Blackbishop

Ah, I understand now, thanks for clarifying.

Then, I wonder if Nintendo releases a Switch version of that game will those guys go ballistic?

    • Fernando Garcia

Go play Idolmaster: Cinderella Girls then.

  • I can’t believe people asked this

What else does “core RPG Pokémon” mean to you?

Reggie must’ve been rolling his eyes mentally

    • Carlos

You’d be surprised. I’ve heard people say they think it will be a Colosseum game.

      • Auragar

        Those people are fools.

    • Auragar

My thoughts exactly but some people are stupid, and even with this answer continue to be stupid. Spin-offs? Hahahahaha. GameFreak doesn’t even touch those, but yeah it is a “core RPG” what else would it be. This just doubly confirms it but some people are still stupid about it.

  • Odali

If it ain’t broken don’t fix it!

  • Sno

When asked which pokemon may appear in game, Fils-bot’s eyes lit up and thunderously replied, “Which pokemon? Try all of them!”

  • xevidroid

So we xan exclude a real open world like a lot of people have been dreaming for years )=

    • darkfire998

How can you exclude the possibility? It’s not like we know anything else than that it’s going to be a core game.

      • xevidroid

Well from his words he seemed to implicate a standard pokèmon game, but yeah you’re right, we might have some hope yet!

        • Indielink

I mean, before Gen 7, I would have considered “core” game to mean 8 gyms. There’s always room to change the style of something but still keep it within the trappings of the series.

          Case and point: Metroid Prime

          • Auragar

And with Gen VIII they will be going back to 8 gyms because fans didn’t like the trial bs. It was boring and lame. It was a one time thing because ooh ahhh Alola is a special snowflake island region.

        • Auragar

          Don’t expect it.

      • Auragar

The games already are somewhat open world but he wants bland boring open world which won’t happen. Pokemon Switch will be the same formula with slightly prettier less laggy graphics.

    • Xstream

No thanks. Much to the surprise of many people, “open world” isn’t a feature that automatically makes every game better. It also doesn’t work with the pokemon formula at all. Open world doesn’t work when the core mechanic of your game is being able to catch any foe you fight. If you can just catch a level 90 pokemon in the first 10 minutes of the game, it just ruins it.

      • Carlos

They can find ways around it, like a level scaling system.

        • Auragar

          Poor way of handling it.

          • Carlos

That’s just one example. I’m sure they could find other ways.

Also, how is it a poor way of handling it?

          • Auragar

It is just lazy and also most Pokemon evolve through level up.

        • Xstream

Which ALSO takes the fun out of pokemon. Another key element of Pokémon is the element of shared experiences. Every pokemon fan in the world can tell you what pokemon to expect, at what level, etc. of Kanto.

Stuff like level scaling or varying distribution of pokemon would totally disrupt that.

          • Carlos

Maybe that’s what the series needs. I love playing Pokémon but it has become pretty stagnant.

Plus it could give another reason for breeding. Let’s say in one area they have an Abra. If another player goes to that same area much later then they would find Kadabra or Alakazam instead. They would then need to breed them to get the Abra.

      • Auragar

Well the games are already somewhat open world, just not boring bland crappy open world that doesn’t make every game better but instead makes it worse. It ruined Zelda for me. But yeah being more open than it currently is wouldn’t really work.

    • My god can the “open world” trend just die already?

      • xevidroid

A pokemon open world game has never been truly done, is an interesting concept and could definitely work. It could be done well, there could be a real pokemon world to explore, like in the anime. It could be a nice rpg with 3d graphics and a huge map, but with the same core combat system and a levelling system that scales enemies so that we can have something similar to the “zoning/rubberbanding” we have now. It’s interesting and I don’t think that asking for a change ONCE in a franchise stagnating since 1995 is asking too much. YES there is an open world frenzy and some games don’t deserve the open world treatment, but If the next Elder Scrolls game wasn’t open world people would complain wouldn’t they? People have been asking for an OW pokemon games since Skyrim was release, I would definitely be interested in it.

        • Auragar

The games already are somewhat open world, but not so open world that they get boring like typical open worlds. At least before Sun and Moon and X and Y. And Zoning/rubberbanding is lame poor way to do it.

      • Auragar

        Please. Open world is boring.

    • Auragar

I mean Pokemon games are sort of more or less open world at least they used to be more so than they are with Sun/Moon and to a lesser extent X/Y.

  • Tlink7

    As mentioned at E3 😛

    • Auragar

Indeed, but reiteration is always good right…? Eh. *shrug*

      • Tlink7

I suppose so. Wouldn’t be the first time Nintendo changed something… though changing this would have caused a lot of anger, which is why I just assumed it to be correct 😀

        • Auragar

It seems pointless but maybe this will help some people who are expecting Pokemon Switch to be something it is not to realize that it will be what it is and nothing else. Doesn’t work with everyone though obviously.

          • Tlink7

Hrm. Maybe to prevent another Stars situation from happening… But who are we kidding, one leak that promises people exactly what they want and they’ll be believing nonsense again in no time 😛

          • Auragar

            Yeah people are weird…

  • hi-chan!

Even though I don’t like Pokemon I am still slightly excited for this

  • Princess_Eevee9

I’ll say it again, but I’m surprised that people automatically think that this is gonna be Generation VIII. Most obviously it’s gonna be Pokémon Colosseum/XD Gale of Darkness or Pokémon Conquest. Hell I even believe that it might be Pokémon Warriors that Koei Tecmo reported wanting to do last year. If it’s a main series Pokémon then it’s Sinnoh remasters.

    • zelgadis greywords

      1.1 First generation (1996–1999)
      1.2 Second generation (1999–2002)
      1.3 Third generation (2002–2006)
      1.4 Fourth generation (2006–2010)
      1.5 Fifth generation (2010–2013)
      1.6 Sixth generation (2013–2016)
      1.7 Seventh generation (2016–present)

      • Auragar

No way Pokemon Switch is next year, but yeah it is guaranteed to be Gen VIII not a spin-off or remake. Wouldn’t make any sense at all.

    • Auragar

It’s not a spin off it is a core rpg as well as a traditional game As Reggie stated besides GameFreak don’t make the of and this is being made by them.

  • jimmy

well if they’re going to do it they need to do it right with big characters and more open world and free moving maps plus redo the fighting system and lots of sidequest

    • Auragar

It will essentially be the Pokemon we all know and love/hate but with slightly prettier graphics and that is all, don’t expect huge changes.

  • Auragar

So it will be a traditional Pokemon game as was already implied when it was announced as a core rpg. Shock and surprise. Not. This was expected and known already.

  • TheJuiciest

    Challenge mode would be welcome.

  • Blake Good

    Pretty much gen 8 confirmed.

    Pokémon Plutonuim and Uranium.

    • Auragar

I like those names but they are unlikely. Also they won’t be out next year. Pokemon Switch 2019. Then D/P will be a year or two later. 2020 or 2021.

      • Blake Good

        X&Y came out in 2013
        OR&AS came out in 2014
        S&M came out in 2016
        US&UM comes out in 2017
Gen 8 will probably be 2018
Gen 4 remakes will probably be 2019

        • Auragar

Feel free to believe whatever you want, but when it doesn’t happen don’t complain.

          • Blake Good

            Look who’s talking.

          • Auragar

When have I complained about not getting something I was hoping for that made no sense for me to hope for?

          • Blake Good

            It happens with everyone.

          • Auragar

Nah. I don’t do that. I have realistic if pessimistic at times expectations so I never expect more than is likely.

          • Blake Good

I’m not saying that gen 8 will come out next year, but it will be sometime between 2018-2019, though.

          • Blake Good

I’m not saying that the gen 8 games will come out next year, but probably some time between 2018-2019. The only year Pokemon took a break was, back in 2015. They also did this a lot, back in the 2000s between gens 3 and 4 as welll, but it was only for maybe 1-2 years.

The reason why I said D/P remakes would be in 2019 is because every 5 years, Game Freak is remaking a gen. FR/LG in 2004, HG/SS in 2009, and OR/AS in 2014. So that would sound about right for D/P. Also, there’s no doubt that the remakes will be on the Switch. FR/LG was on GBA, HG/SS was on DS, and OR/AS was on 3DS.

  • Justmadeanaccount2

This game better be a full on 3D console Pokemon game and not some lazy HD 3DS looking game.

    • Auragar

It will likely just be a slightly more clean and crisp 3DS Pokemon game. Maybe Gen IX will be more in-line with what you want though.

  • Mohammad Yasin

not sure why ppl thought they would do a mid gen game for switch that makes no sense and never done before gens are contained

  • Randall

I Hope It’s a Core Game; AND NOT JUST ANOTHER COLOSSEUM, OR XD, OR ANY OF THEM OTHER CONSOLE-EXCLUSIVE SPIN-OFF TITLES!! AND I WANT GYMS TO COME BACK BECAUSE I’M SICK OF TRIALS; I DON’T FIND THEM INTERESTING AT ALL; I CANNOT EVEN BRING MYSELF TO WATCH A PLAYTHROUGH OF THE ALOLA GAMES; BECAUSE I’M NOT INTERESTED!! I REALLY SINCERELY HOPE THAT ISLAND TRIALS ARE EXCLUSIVE TO THE ALOLA REGIONS[THOUGH I W-O-U-L-D LOVE TO SEE NEW REGIONAL VARIENTS OF OLD POKEMON; AND THE RETURN OF CHARACTER CUSTOMIZATION(IT SEEMS LIKE IT’LL BE DONE IN EVERY NEW NON-REMAKE GAME FROM GEN VI/KALOS ONWARDS; WHILE BEING ABSENT IN REMAKES SUCH AS OMEGA RUBY & ALPHA SAPPHIRE, AS WELL AS A POTENTIAL SET OF SINNOH REMAKES(DEFINITELY COMING TO NINTENDO SWITCH, THOUGH WE DON’T KNOW WHEN THEY’LL COME; PROBABLY AFTER THE CONFIRMED NINTENDO SWITCH POKEMON GAME; IN 2019)]

    • awng782

      Calm down.

Pokemon on Switch will be a core Pokemon game developed by Gamefreak. That’s what a “a traditional find, battle, train type experience” is for Pokemon.
