Rumor: Best Buy price change report indicates Switch will cost $249.99

Posted on January 10, 2017 by (@NE_Brian) in Rumors, Switch

Update: Bumped to the top. This has the SKU 5670100 in Best Buy’s price system with the description “Nintendo N2”, and is $249.99. The name is definitely a placeholder. Whether or not the price is as well remains to be seen.

Original: Reddit user radoster95, who is a staffer at Best Buy, claims to have seen a price change report from the retailer today. The document apparently states that Switch will cost $249.99.

Normally this is the sort of thing we’d pass on sharing. However, judging by radoster95’s history, he does actually seem to be a Best Buy employee.

The $249.99 tidbit is the only thing we have from radoster95 at the moment, unfortunately. He did not elaborate on the possibility of bundles (there have been rumors of a higher-priced package) or anything else.

Note that even if what radoster95 has seen is accurate, it’s not a confirmation of Switch’s price by any means. Thankfully, we’re just a couple of days away from an official announcement.

At that price I’am not expecting much in the specs.

    • ImReallyNotAmused

      you’re going to get a handheld/console 3 times more powerful than a wii u for $250, the 3ds xl is $200 and the wii u still $300.

    • hi v3.0

Everyone knew that it’s gonna be weaker than the XB1 you know…

    • glauca

Eh. Some rumours said that Nvidia might take some losses with creating Switch chips. Honestly, I still think the Switch (docked) will be close to the XBO. I guess we just have to wait and see. Honestly, $250 is the perfect price point of the system. That’s going to pull a lot of people.

      • bugman83

Yeah I’am just setting my expectations very low like usual.

      • ForeVision

I will cheer and laugh into a mess of emotions if it turns out to be stronger than most people expect.

  • SpectralDynamite

This is actually a fair price. I’m hoping there are bundles available with packed-in games for like $300. I’ve been saving my money, so I should have enough for this long before release.

  • theFooFighter

$250 would be perfect IMO. I already have $200 set aside and over the course of my next few pay days I’ll try to save up around $400 so I can go all out and get all of the good launch games

    • Exy

They’re already undercutting the competition with this price so if it’s marketed and stocked properly, it’ll probably break the Wii U hardware sales total in record time.

    • D-Volt

I’m in a similar position. I’m going back to the states at the end of this month and returning to Japan in April. The Switch is the perfect console for me, since I may not have a TV available for some time. Saved up $250 for it, but I gotta get some more moolah if I want any launch games.

  • hi v3.0

This whole time I was believing the Switch would be $250 so yay !

    • Supporter

      Well, yay if it’s true!

    • Roto Prime

(>.<) I hate it when you right!

      • hi v3.0

        XD

        • Roto Prime

          I wan’t it to be $199.99 so bad I was going to reply to all you post with $199.99 as a troll….thanks Nintendo for taking away all my fun ;_____;

          • ForeVision

If it’s genuinely worth the 249,99 then why would the 50 extra matter that much? It’s not like you’re to buy a Switch every month.

          • Roto Prime

if rumors are true then its high price for a handheld, I hope it is powerful when docked and just a Wii U +.

          • ForeVision

Agreed, and in 2 days we’ll know if it’s worth the price their asking, and whether or not the home console part lives up to it’s name. I for one believe that they’ll shoot themselves in the foot with a nail gun if the home console part falls short.

          • Roto Prime

HELL YA, now we talking, I’m totally down with $249.99 if all stars line up my dude!!! OH BOY Jan 12 YES!!

          • hi v3.0

3DS launched with $250, this is powerful gaming tablet, plus it’s near XB1 level when docked

          • Roto Prime

Coño V3.0 we both know that it is rumored to be Wii U +. And for the first time in my life….and if you tell anyone I will deny it…I wan’t you to be right…

          • awng781

Worst case scenario, the Switch will be ~3X the Wii U when docked.

          • Roto Prime

            Wii U +++

          • hi v3.0

It’s okay there’s always next time…. if the Switch fails

          • Roto Prime

no more fails, epic wins please!

          • ForeVision

Sometimes failure isn’t an option, and not to sound dramatic, but I’d reckon this is one of those times for Nintendo.

          • Roto Prime

Nintendo in for the WIN, USE your Forevision and tell me now!!

          • ForeVision

Well, If I were to go by what I think, then I’d say that Nintendo has a lot at stake after Wii-U, combined with this being Iwata’s brainchild and them potentially making a massive user base by combining (hopefully, if they get people to buy the system) handheld and console audience. If it goes well, they’d have a big, perhaps massive user base which any developer would love to tap into.

Of course, that’s all mere speculation, only time can tell.

          • Roto Prime

Your on to something! I’m sure everything you stated will happen, I personally feel the same way! FOR IWATA!!!!!!!!

  • TDude73

If that rumor is 100% true, Nintendo have done an excellent job of pricing a new generation hybrid platform. Or as Jimmy Fallon says, “It’s a 3-in-1 system!” or something to that particular quote.

  • Supporter

That’s the same price the 3DS launched with. Let’s see if that’s true come this Thursday.

  • dbizal

Everyone keeps switching up their Prices…

    I’ll leave now.

  • KnightWonder

Alright, time to count how many people are going to whine that it’s not $199.

    • SpectralDynamite

      I count one so far.

    • jbmindtrick

Actually, I’m gonna whine that it’s not $299. I would rather have it be more powerful than less and cheaper.

      • KnightWonder

Sorry, but with what the Switch it, it probably won’t be as powerful as the XBone or PS4. It’s all in the architecture.

  • Roto Prime

    PLEASE COME WITH A GAME!

    • hi v3.0

      Nah that will be $300
      So I guess you’re saving 10 bucks if you’re gonna spend $300 😛

  • Abra

    :V NOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Roto Prime

      NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

  • Invitado

Only 2 days for the event to know all about switch.
New rumor: the online will be paid

    • Abra

i do not think nintendo needs paid online really…

      • Invitado

I know, I only write that because I heard from obe1plays.

  • ForeVision

A good price if true, I’m curious as to those bundles.

  • nekoknight

The Nintendo Switch appears to be designed very efficiently, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this turned out to be true. Plus the fact that the Switch plays game cards and not discs means they don’t need to put in an expensive disc drive. It’ll still be a powerful system.

    • Indielink

I think that a lot of people are forgetting about how enormous a cost saving factor the lack of a disc drive is.

  • Stuart

Really good price if that’s true. I hope they show a few bundles as well.

    • They should do a new Super Mario game pack-in. That would seal the purchase for most fans and casuals alike.

  • TheJuiciest

Perfect for me. That’s right about where I draw the line about being an early adopter.

  • It’s a great price like the 90s days when a new console debuted. It wasn’t that long ago that certain price points didn’t fly. Imagine a modern 3DO releasing today, the reception would be much different. The Sega Saturn launched at $399 back in 1995 and was considered by some to be too expensive, now it’s expected.

  • Blanco8x8

I’m actually planning on buying the Switch at Best Buy.

  • EnderThaFoE

I’m willing to bet that the sku he saw was for the base model that comes without the “console” part that attaches the tablet to your tv. The model with the console base will cost $349.99.

    • ronin4life

Isn’t the connector literally a glorified HDMI plug with stand?

Plus, the whole point of the switch is the dual nature of plug and play. The stand is definately part of the base unit

  • Melatelo

I’ll admit when Nintendo stressed they wouldn’t sell the system below manufacturing costs (unlike the Wii U and 3DS and launch), they had me worried. $250 does seem like the perfect price though as opossed to around $300- which is what I originally had in mind.

  • I like that price~.
