Switch provides a boost to GameStop’s sales during the holiday

Posted on January 12, 2018 by (@NE_Brian) in News, Switch

For the nine-week holiday period ended December 30, GameStop sales increased 10.6% year-over-year to $2.77 billion. A big reason for that? Switch.

GameStop interim CEO Dan DeMatteo said in a statement that Nintendo’s console helped drive the retailer’s sales. Switch, along with the Xbox One, led to a rise in hardware sales by 38.3%. New game sales were also up 7.3% year-over-year, thanks to Switch games and Call of Duty: WWII. Switch was also a major factor in a 33.7% increase in accessory sales.

Nintendo in 2018 is still saving the gaming industry.

Makes you wonder why gamers want Nintendo gone or to go third party. Nintendo only adds growth to the industry.

Gamers should be happy when Nintendo is doing an amazing job and concerned when they are not.

Congratulations to Nintendo for a stellar 2017! 2018 looks like another one for the books!

If Nintendo wasn’t around this industry would be a lot more boring, that’s for sure.

Another big piece of news that I heard on another site that this is the first time in 7 years that the Japanese game market rose rather than fell.

A couple of years back: This will be the last generation of consoles as we know them, people don’t want dedicated consoles anymore.
2018: Switch and PS4 are breaking sales records around the world.

Xbox One X is proof that Power isn’t everything. Consumers are finally catching on that games can only look so pretty.

Gamers want a change. They need and crave change. Nintendo knows this.

I wouldn’t be surprised if in the next decade gamers are looking back on the Wii U thinking they should of picked one up because they missed out on some fantastic games. Well they would if Nintendo would stop porting them all over to the Switch lol.

I understand why they are doing it and for a business sense it makes the most sense.

“Wii U thinking they should of picked one up because they missed out on some fantastic games”

You mean like all the ones that are remastered/being remastered/going to be remastered for the Switch?

Did you finish reading the rest of my comment? I for some reason don’t believe you did.

The Wii U as a console was just a bad proposition overall for everything except some first party games. I say some because they even had not so favorable reception among even those.

I think most people wouldn’t lose sleep, so to speak, about not ever playing even the good ones. I myself haven’ play Zelda: Skyward Sword( note I actually and to think about this title and was about to write Zelda: Sword…whatever). Super Mario 3D World was blatantly the 3DS game with multiplayer capability.

You brought some interesting points here. First, I 100% agree that games look good enough in HD, so 4k capable consoles are completely out of my radar. Also, games could be in HD or 4k, but its artstyle is what truly determines if the games will stand the test of time or not.

Second, it will be interesting to see if all these Switch ports of Wii U games would affect Wii U’s eventual retro and collecting status. There are still great games for the console out there, but some of its defining titles like DKTF, Bayo2, BotW (let’s not forget that it began as a Wii U exclusive) and MK8 can be found on Switch, and are better there in one way or the other.

I still don’t know why people bought PS4 at launch with no games. Too much hype? The sales were too high to call that “an accident”.

I would want to see how that compares to other years too.
I remember 2016 as being a pretty sh*++y year for games overall and espacially Nintendo with its dying home console.
Doesn’t seem like that big a deal that they are doing better than in 2016, there’s one more player actually playing in the field I mean.
