Ganryu 2 announced for Switch, return of the 1990 side-scroller
Ganryu 2 is coming to Switch, publishers PixelHeart and Just For Games, and developer Storybird Studio announced today. The game will release April 22, 2022.
Ganryu 2 is a direct sequel to the original Ganryu, a game developed by VISCO back in 1999 for the NeoGeo. It directly follows the ending of the original game, and just like the former is heavily inspired by the story of Takeshi Muzo and the “The Stone and the Sword” books.
Similar to the original, this game is a side-scrolling action platformer with a heavy focus on feudal Japanese themes and visuals. You’ll relive a fantasy version of the adventures of Takeshi Muzo, traveling across Japan in all four of its seasons as you attempt to defeat Sasaki Kojiro once again. It also retains a pixel-art style similar to the first game, but also inspired by other classics such as Shinobi 3 and Shadow Dancer.
Gameplay-wise, it’ll be an upgrade over the traditional game with improved action-platforming mechanics, such as double jumps, wall jumps and kunai throwing. You’ll also be able to utilize special abilities named Kamis as you explore the variety of environments in the game and try to grab new collectable Hanafuda cards hidden throughout the levels.
