Wii U breaking nonuse

Some reports are making the rounds regarding an issue with Wii U consoles in which they could be corrupted due to nonuse.

Lingering memory system errors seem to be the culprit here with the error code 160-0103 appearing on screen. One person going by the name “Cireza” says that their system is no longer working despite having it in a box for many years. Nothing was done to the console, and it isn’t modded in any way.

There are similar accounts from others online, most of which go back to having the Wii U off for a long period. As another example, a few months ago, Reddit user John25601600 also saw that his Wii U wasn’t working after not using it for over five years. This person also saw a black screen with a 160-0103 error code at start up.

Unfortunately, if you encounter the error code, your options are limited for a fix. Since the platform was retired years ago, Nintendo moved on from repairing Wii U units. The only possibility some sites are mentioning involves a NAND memory backup.

Sometimes with these types of reports, they can become a bit overblown. It’s unclear just how widespread this issue is – it could end up affecting only a small percentage of Wii U owners. Still, if you have a Wii U, you may want to see if yours turns on.
