Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Nintendo’s various franchises like Mario and The Legend of Zelda, has commented on why the company is now more focused on making movies.

Nintendo is taking films more seriously than it ever has before. The Super Mario Bros. Movie kicked things off a couple of years ago, and it’ll be getting a sequel in 2026 based on Super Mario Galaxy. Don’t forget that we’re also set to receive a live action movie for The Legend of Zelda in 2027.

Speaking with Kyodo News, Miyamoto said that movies allows fans to reconnect with the company’s games. He told the outlet: “Games eventually stop running when newer versions come out, but films remain forever.”

Miyamoto isn’t as involved with game development as he used to be. As an executive fellow at Nintendo, he’s now more focused on movies and has played a big role in the opening of the Super Nintendo World theme parks around the world.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was officially announced last month, and you can see the first trailer here. It has been rumored (but far from confirmed) that certain characters will be appearing in the film.
