Do It Yourself Challenge guide in Mario & Luigi: Brothership
Mario & Luigi: Brothership is home to 29 different challenges. Most of them are easy, and involve simply getting an Excellent on each Bros. Move 30 times. One of them in particular, however, is not easy: the Do It Yourself challenge. For this one, you have to defeat 300 enemies without using wear or accessories. You can use Boots and Hammer equipment, to be clear, but nothing else.
Other than the obvious 300 enemy count being a hindrance, there’s another problem with the Do It Yourself challenge: after a certain point in the story, it becomes more difficult to find weak enemies. We’ll explain why in a moment, but if you want to avoid spoilers, you may want to return later. In the meantime, an important word of advice: wherever you are in the story right now, we’d recommend starting to work on this challenge. It gets tougher if you clear the main story first!
Do It Yourself challenge guide
Now that we’ve passed the spoiler warning, we can describe what exactly makes the Do It Yourself challenge kind of annoying. At the very end of the game, just before the final area, the main antagonist creates a red fog that affects every single enemy in the game. The fog turns them into more powerful Glohm versions, which is a problem for us. We want the enemies to be weak enough that we can defeat them with a first strike, but most Glohm enemies end-game will survive. Furthermore, enemies that normally attack in groups like Goombas and Shy Guys only appear one by one after they’ve been infected with Glohm. In battle, they’ll multiply themselves with fake copies instead, which do not count toward your total when defeated. That means you’re fighting five or six enemies at once, but only actually get one enemy logged as defeated.
If you’re at the very end of the game and are wondering how to most effectively complete the Do It Yourself challenge, we did come up with a good way to farm enemies. All you have to do is launch yourself to Minmin Islet, which has Snaptor enemies that were not affected by the endgame Glohm fog. This means you can hit them with a first strike, which will defeat every single enemy in the battle that unfolds. This is a quick and easy way to increase your counter, though it won’t earn you much in the way of Coins or EXP since they’re low-level. When Minmin Islet is cleared out of enemies, simply return to Shipshape Island and then go back to the islet and the Snaptors will respawn. You could also just battle high-level enemies to get Coins and EXP for your time, but it does come at a significant time cost and we assume you’re looking to finish the Do It Yourself challenge as quickly as possible.
If you haven’t reached the endgame yet but don’t mind spoilers, you could head to Offandon Island and beat up a bunch of Bowser’s minions. This works at Bowser’s Castle on Wayaway Island as well, or you could go for the pitifully weak Seedles on Rumbla Island. The enemies respawn after a short timer and are more likely to respawn if you leave and revisit the area in question.
