Entertainment Weekly’s chooses Kirby’s Epic Yarn as the worst game of 2010
Entertainment Weekly’s choices for the best and worst games of 2010 have arrived. And it seems the list has been causing quite a bit of controversy. First, let’s take a look at the top 10 games of the year:
1. Red Dead Redemption
2. Limbo
3. God of War III
4. Dance Central
5. Donkey Kong Country Returns
6. Mass Effect 2
7. Call of Duty: Black Ops
8. Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood
9. NBA 2K11
10. Angry Birds
Nothing too surprising, right? The “winners” for the worst game of 2010 are another story, however…
1. Kirby’s Epic Yarn – “There’s a fine line between cute and grating, delightfully busy and irritatingly overwhelming- and for me, this hyperactively adorable side-scrolling puzzler crosses it.” – Jeff Jensen
2. Metroid: Other M – “It’s bad enough that the controls are often infuriatingly clunky. But reducing proud pioneering gaming heroine Samus Aran to a glum functionary pining for her old boss? Sacrilege!” – Adam B. Vary
3. Kung Fu Rider
I personally would not say that Kirby’s Epic Yarn was the worst game of 2010. Sure, it was on the easy side, and it was far from perfect. But again, I do not think it was the worst. And just think about the amount of shovelware released this year!
Now, while everyone is entitled to their own opinion, a few people noticed that Entertainment Weekly actually rated Kirby’s Epic Yarn quite highly earlier this year. Here’s an excerpt from the publication’s review:
“A pink globe gets plopped into a world constructed of colorful twine and craftsy cloth, and the result is likely the most adorable game ever. Yes, it’s kinda easy, but you’ll never stop smiling. B+”
To be fair, the original reviewer was Adam Vary. But you’d think that a game which was rated rather highly by a publication wouldn’t go down as the worst game of the year. It’s pretty odd!
