Famitsu posts Japanese hardware and software sales for fiscal year 2020, Nintendo dominates the market

The sales numbers are out for both video game software and hardware in Japan for fiscal year 2020, which would be from March 30, 2020 to March 28, 2021. Famitsu released in its column the top 20 software sales for this time period and the sales records for all the systems on the market. It is notable that of the top 20 software bestsellers, 17 of them were Switch releases.

This contributed to the huge numbers for the Switch software sales during 2020 in Japan, selling through over 23,000,000 units (3 million more than last year).

Finally, here’s the total for Switch hardware sales in fiscal year 2020, which reached over 6 million (800,000 more than last year).

In short, Nintendo had a great year in 2020 even with next gen consoles releasing in November. It will be interesting to see if the Switch can keep this momentum going throughout 2021.
