Fast Fusion frame rate resolution

Thanks to Digital Foundry, we have new technical details about Fast Fusion on Nintendo Switch 2, and as usual information is available about things like frame rate and resolution. There are also interesting tidbits about the use of DLSS which is negatively impacting image quality, though that’ll be addressed with a new option coming with a patch shortly.

Here’s the full roundup:

– Larger courses than before
– Changes to lighting and materials model for Shin’en’s engine
– Shin’en is using a hybrid system that blends multiple lighting techniques with a mix of dynamic caching and a small amount of baked lighting data
– Lighting data per track is just 5-15MB total
– The game only needs about 120MB of baked lighting data
– This helps keep the game’s file size down to just 3.5GB
– Abundance of volumetric fog, Shin’en uses a technique that helps it make higher resolution than it actually is
– All lighting calculations are deferred and done on the GPU, which doesn’t affect the limited CPU
– Lighting system scales linearly with resolution
– For resolution in Fast Fusion, 1080p, 1440p, 4K resolutions available
– End result isn’t that high as the game is upscaling from a much lower base pixel count
– Shin’en seems to be using the Switch 2 variant of DLSS to the extreme
– Ex: Going from 612p to 4K with DLSS requires a lot of interpolation, causing serious visual artifacts and crazy visual breakup
– Fast RMX on Switch actually runs at a higher resolution with a more stable image because of this
– Patch 1.3 coming shortly will target 1440p in docked mode and 1080p in handheld mode with a resolution scaling solution similar to Fast RMX
– For frame rate in Fast Fusion, performance, balance, and quality modes target 60 FPS with variable pixel input quality
– Ultra Quality mode drops to 30 FPS
– Image quality takes a bit hit with GameShare
– Quality of materials, track detail, ships are all impressive
– Tracks are more detailed and expansive than Fast RMX
– Post-processing has been greatly improved
– Excellent HDR implementation
– Supports full surround sound
