GameStop auctioning off Nintendo Switch 2 system damaged by stapler
We have an update on the situation that happened last month in which one specific GameStop location damaged Nintendo Switch 2 systems with a stapler, as now the retailer is auctioning off the first unit that was impacted. Fortunately, it’s all for a good cause.
To get you caught up to speed, one GameStop store thought it’d be a good idea to staple receipts to the boxes. What they didn’t realize is that by doing so, the stapler went through and hit the Nintendo Switch 2 screen. Anyone who was impacted received a free replacement, but since it was a bit of a strange story, the news circulated online.
That brings us to today. The “GameStop 2025 Staplegate Charity Auction” just went live, which includes the first Nintendo Switch 2 system that was stapled – but the screen has now been repaired and ready for play. On top of that, the black stapler used by the GameStop associate at the time is included as well. The auction also comes with the original retail packaging with the staple mark, and yes, even the staple which was “carefully extracted and preserved”. Rounding out the package is a Certificate of Authenticity signed by GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen.
At the time of writing there have been close to 100 bids with the asking price at over $10,000 – we only expect that to increase. GameStop says the proceeds will benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
You can check out the auction for yourself here. We also have further coverage of what happened during that Nintendo Switch 2 launch at GameStop with the stapler here.
