GameStop sees “overwhelming demand” for Wii U pre-orders, wait list for PowerUp Rewards members
Wii U pre-orders, at least at GameStop, are a little out of control. The retailer said today that it has been experiencing “overwhelming demand”.
GameStop has therefore ceased pre-orders of the Deluxe and Basic Sets.
A wait list has been made just for PowerUp Rewards members. Those who are are a part of the program can be sent a notice about when pre-orders will open up once again. Consumers are cautioned, however, that “enrolling does not guarantee a Wii U on or by a specified date or at a specific price.”

GRAPEVINE, TEXAS — GameStop (NYSE: GME), the world’s largest multichannel retailer of video games, announced today that it has created a Nintendo Wii U wait list exclusively for members of its PowerUp Rewards loyalty program. Due to overwhelming demand, the retailer recently stopped taking pre-orders on the Wii U Deluxe Set and Basic Set. The new wait list program allows PowerUp Rewards members to sign up to be notified when additional quantities of the Wii U become available for purchase after the Nov. 18 launch.
“Demand for Wii U has been off the charts and we know many of our PowerUp Rewards members are anxious to get their hands on one,” said GameStop president Tony Bartel. “We’re happy to offer our customers this exclusive opportunity to join the wait list for this must-have item.”
PowerUp Rewards members can visit any U.S. GameStop store to join the Wii U wait list (limit two per household). Once on the list, customers will be notified when a Wii U is available for purchase and will have 48 hours to respond. There is no deposit required to join the wait list and enrolling does not guarantee a Wii U on or by a specified date or at a specific price.
