Japan’s best-selling games of August 2025 – Mario Kart World still on top

New data provided by Famitsu gives us a look at Japan’s best-selling games of August 2025.

Just like last month, Mario Kart World is still #1. And also just like the previous month, Donkey Kong Bananza is in second. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles 2 did pretty well, selling nearly 100,000 copies at retail alone on Nintendo Switch.

Below is the full list of Japan’s best-selling games of August 2025:

1. [NS2] Mario Kart World – 261,842 / 1,655,926
2. [NS2] Donkey Kong Bananza – 104,263 / 286,119
3. [NSW] Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles 2 – 97,425 / NEW
4. [PS5] Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater – 63,585 / NEW
5. [NSW] Super Robot Wars Y – 60,532 / NEW

At 796,000 copies of games sold at retail, Nintendo was by far the most successful publisher in Japan last month. The next closest was Bandai Namco at 106,000 games sold. Closing out the top three was Sony at 28,000 copies sold.

Nintendo Switch 2 continues its streak as the best-selling console of the month, having sold 320,000 units (for a total of 1,934,000 units sold since launch). That said, Nintendo Switch didn’t do too poorly, having sold 94,517 units (actually close to double the amount from June).
