Mario Kart World online play and more down due to huge Google Cloud internet outage [update: back up]

Original: No, it’s not just you – online play for Mario Kart World is down, along with other Nintendo services and plenty of other things across the internet.

The culprit seems to be a massive outage with Google Cloud. Mario Kart World’s online play uses this, so online is currently broken. The game will try searching for players, but will eventually time out with a server communication issue and the error code 231-4608 given.

At the moment we’re not sure if anything can be done. Nintendo may just be at the mercy of Google Cloud. Obviously Google will want to restore things as soon as possible, as it’s much more than Nintendo services affected here.

Mario Kart World is one of the biggest impacts on the Nintendo side currently, but the company lists all network services as being down. This includes various things related to Nintendo Switch 2, Switch, 3DS, Wii U, and the web. Basically, if you encounter any issues, now you know why. The good news is that some things do still work such as the Nintendo eShop – at least as far as we can tell.

We’ll update this post if we receive any status updates, and you can keep track of our Nintendo Switch 2 news here. The Google Cloud status page can also be seen here.

Update: Things do seem to be working again. Google’s page is showing all services have been restored.
