Yami Kids

The moody monster taming Yami Kids has been confirmed for Nintendo Switch release. We’ll be seeing it sometime in 2026.

Yami Kids, which previously saw a successful Kickstarter run, intends to update the monster taming genre for the modern player that offers “a riveting narrative with serious themes including tragedy, familial bonds, and revenge”. The project features pixel art, a retro-flavored soundtrack, gameplay mechanics incorporating day and night cycles resulting in nighttime “Shadow Duels”, and the inclusion of community feedback.

Here’s some additional information:

Yami kids is a retro, monster taming game that revolves around the Yami Kids, and their role in both the Overworld, and The Underworld.

Uncover the mystery on why an evil organization is making every effort to track down the Yami family, and put an end to the Yami lineage

Yami Kids features retro graphics with modern-day Quality of Life, various difficulty settings, gameplay customizations, and a brand new twist on a classic genre.

Key Features

  • The Battle System: Yami Kids has a monster vs monster setup, as well as 2v2 battles. Navigate your way through a fun new twist on turn-based battles, with 80+ Oni to train and collect.
  • Introducing the Monsters: Yami Kids is filled with Powerful “Oni”, which you can summon, collect, train, and do with what you wish! Just be sure not to get on their bad side…

One key part of Yami Kids are “Shadow Duels” that only take place at night. This is where you battle with real monsters, rather than simulated ones. Due to the dangers that revolve around the monsters in this world, the loss of a shadow duel results in the death of the losing party.

When the player loses a battle, they get sent to the Underworld, a place where you can get unique items, visit mysterious places, and perform various activities before making a deal with the “residents” there to get sent back home to the world of the living.

Other Key features may include:

  • Built-in Nuzlocke System (Monsters die for good upon death)
  • Hardcore modes (increased difficulty, super-hardmode resulting in save deletion, etc)
  • The “Tower of Yami” where players can test their skills
  • 2 “Game Versions” chosen at save file creation for gameplay variety
  • Local Trading of Monsters and items (between save files)
