National tournament series celebrating the launch of Smash Bros. 3DS begins on Oct. 4

Nintendo has announced a special national tournament for the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. in celebration of the game’s launch. On October 4, 15 GameStop stores around the country – including the Nintendo World store in New York – will host local tournaments featuring three rounds of four-player battles.

Participants will be chosen on a first-come, first-served basis with no pre-registration required. Each local tournament will be comprised of 64 players. Participants can (but are not required to) bring their 3DS system and/or copy of Smash Bros.

Here’s a look at the different tournament locations – note that each will begin at 11 AM local time:

Winners of each local tournament will win a trip to New York to participate in the Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS National Open Tournament at Nintendo World on October 11. This will be broadcast live on Nintendo’s Twitch and YouTube channels starting at 6 PM ET / 3 PM PT. During the Smash Bros. 3DS National Open Tournament, the top 16 players will engage in an all-out, no-holds-barred battle showcasing all the game has to offer. The winner of the final tournament will win a trophy and champion’s robe.

Nintendo will share more details about how fans can attend the event at Nintendo World in the future, though you can find the official rules here.. The store will also be selling Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS before its nationwide launch. A special fan event will be held starting at 8 PM ET on October 2 to be among the first to purchase the game.
