Nintendo doesn’t think Switch 2 announcement will hurt Switch 1 sales, Switch 1 will be sold “as long as there’s demand”

We have a few more words out of Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa, who today commented on Switch 1 sales in light of Switch 2 arriving later in 2025.

Furukawa told investors that the company doesn’t believe that the recent announcement of the new console will greatly affect sales of its current system. “We don’t think the impact of reluctance to buy is that great, and although we consider this to be a solid eighth year, we were unable to reach our target,” he noted.

Furukawa also said that Nintendo Switch 1 will continue to be sold “as long as there’s demand.” That means you shouldn’t expect to see it leave store shelves as soon as Switch 2 arrives.

Nintendo has said little about Switch 2 outside of the trailer it released last month. One big feature is that backwards compatibility is confirmed. Also, Furukawa said today that the company will be looking to meet demand, which hopefully means it won’t be overly difficult for consumers to purchase the console.

As for Nintendo’s financial results, those numbers came in today and showed that things were down across the board. Given how old Switch is at this point, perhaps that shouldn’t be overly surprising. You can catch up on the details here.
