Nintendo president next system can be described as “Switch next model”
All eyes are on what’s coming next from Nintendo following Switch, especially given today’s news. President Shuntaro Furukawa finally commented on the system’s successor and confirmed that it will be announced within the next fiscal year, which ends in March 2025.
During a financial call, Furukawa was asked if the new console is brand new or something else. He responded by saying that “Switch next model is the appropriate way to describe it”.
With a lot of its hardware, Nintendo is known for pursuing innovation over more simpler updates. The Wii, for example, was totally original with its motion controls. We then saw Wii U go in a different direction through the inclusion of a separate tablet. With Switch, everything was essentially packed into a portable device.
It makes sense that Nintendo would look to build on Switch rather than throw it out for a new concept. The system has sold over 140 million units worldwide and is on pace to become the best-selling video game hardware of all time. Nintendo’s handhelds have also typically done well, so keeping the portable aspect is key.
Our next update from Nintendo will come in June when the next Nintendo Direct airs. However, the presentation will focus strictly on Switch games rather than the successor.
