Metacritic 2023 game publisher rankings

Metacritic published its annual game publisher rankings this week, and we now have the results for the 2023 edition. This gives us insight into how different companies stack up each other based on the quality of their releases and reviews.

Looking at Nintendo, the publisher rose again last year. After moving from #14 to #12 previously, the Big N is now all the way at #6.

In 2023, Nintendo saw an average “Metascore” of 79.5. That’s actually just a slight increase compared to the previous year, which came in at 78.6. Four of Nintendo’s games scored 90 or higher, highlighted by The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom at 96. However, the company only saw a 73 percent success rate, which was the lowest among all publishers in the top ten.

Wondering how the Metascore actually works? It’s based on the average Metascore for all games released during the year, % of scored products with good reviews, % of scored products with bad reviews, and number of “great” titles.

Capcom earned the highest honor with an average Metascore of 84.5. Raw Fury, Chorus Worldwide, Dangen Entertainment, and Annapurna Interactive rounded out the top five. Find the full breakdown of results here.
