Nintendo says its game prices are determined “on a case-by-case basis”, $70 not the trend going forward
Nintendo made it official today that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will cost $70, but that doesn’t mean it’s a sign of things to come. Game Informer managed to get a couple of comments from the company about the situation that may clarify things slightly.
As for why the new Zelda game is priced the way it is, Nintendo simply stated: “We determine the suggested retail price for any Nintendo product on a case-by-case basis.” Game Informer also asked if this is the trend for Nintendo games in the future, to which the Big N said: “No. We determine the suggested retail price for any Nintendo product on a case-by-case basis.”
A game costing $70 is something we haven’t seen from Nintendo before, so the news took many by surprise. However, as noted above, it’s not a set price point.
Metroid Prime Remastered, which saw a surprise announcement and launch today, only costs $40. Pikmin 4, another big upcoming release from Nintendo, will be priced at $60. Thus far Nintendo doesn’t have any other games set at $70, but obviously that’s likely to happen again in the future.
