Nintendo Switch 2 supports variable refresh rate (VRR) [update: uncertainty when docked]
April 2: One tidbit that may have gone under the radar regarding Nintendo Switch 2 is that the system will support variable refresh rate (VRR).
Nintendo notes that VRR “helps games move seamlessly by preventing frame skips and flickering.” Arcade Archives Ridge Racer 2 is one title that has specifically mentioned making use of the tech.
Nintendo highlighted a number of other graphical details for Switch 2 today. These include the ability for 4K support when docked, up to 120 frames per second, and high dynamic range (HDR).
Thanks to Nintendo for today’s news. We also received a Nintendo Switch 2 specs sheet earlier today. In case you missed it, we have it in full here.
April 16: There’s now some uncertainty as to what Nintendo has planned here. On both the U.S. and Canadian websites, the mention of VRR has been removed for docked play.
It used to state the following:
“Take in all the detail with screen resolutions up to 4K when you connect the Nintendo Switch 2 system to a compatible TV using the dedicated dock. The system also supports HDR, VRR, and frame rates up to 120 fps on compatible TVs.”
The sentence is now essentially the same, but without VRR mentioned. We’ll have to wait and see if this is a mistake (which is certainly possible) or if it’s something more.
