Pokemon Scarlet Violet Switch 2 technical improvements

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet recently received a free update with various technical improvements on Nintendo Switch 2, but a new report from Digital Foundry covers it all in detail. While things aren’t perfect, we have more specifics about how the resolution and frame rate have been improved, plus other tidbits.

Here’s the full roundup:

– Big improvement in image quality
– On the current Switch, runs between 720p and 1080p when docked; 576p to 720p in portable mode
– Shimmering mostly taken care of on Switch 2
– Aliasing artifacts also generally absent now
– Pokemon Scarlet and Violet resolution on Nintendo Switch 2 is 1080p internally when docked, without signs of DRS
– Looks slightly soft on a 4K TV, but otherwise provides a good-looking image; seems to use one of NVIDIA’s DLSS technologies
– 648p portable resolution on average, but there seems to be some DRS with 1080p-like final image
– Docked mode on Switch 2 looks a bit sharper and more detailed
– The games have a poor frame rate on Switch 1, often hanging in mid 20s during open world exploration with cutscenes doing worse
– Pokemon Scarlet and Violet frame rate on Switch 2 is usually 60 FPS
– However, there are dropped frames when traversing the world
– Other occasional dips such as when using certain moves in battle
– Animation rates greatly improved on Switch 2
– More Pokemon tend to spawn in on Switch 2
– Big loading time improvements on the new console
– Draw distances, pop-in, shadow resolution, texture resolution, texture tiling at a distance, texturing filtering, underlying visual techniques mostly the same
– Shadow filtering seems slightly different
